Mornin’ from Los Angeles! I’m here speaking at Adobe Max this week, and as always, there’s a bit of excitement around the latest updates. Traditionally Adobe releases new features at every Max and this year is no different.
Especially when it comes to Lightroom. In fact, we’ve crossed from the Lightroom 7.? naming over to Lightroom 8 (Not that version numbers really make a big difference anymore).
Anyway, I did a video of the updates below, but here’s a quick recap.
- Single HDR-Pano merge. – we’ve had HDR merge. We’ve had Pano merge. But now there’s HDR-Pano merge! This is a new feature that will merge your HDR pano images all in one step. I’ve personally stopped shooting HDR Panos because it was just too time consuming to put together so maybe this will get me back 🙂
- Depth Masking – if you’re shooting with one of the phones that support depth masks, Lightroom will now let you work with that mask in Range Masking area of the Local Adjustment tools.
- Process version improvements – the new process version improves quality for high ISO photos.
- Improved Tethering support for certain Canon cameras. Yeah yeah… I know… what about the others? Don’t shoot the messenger here. I have no idea why the others weren’t touched. I mean, we all know that Sony is superior anyway right? I’m kidding!!! 😉 LOL!
Amazing video, thank you 🙂
Loved the Lightroom course I purchased but have a question on my next step. I am using LR 5.x and have about 20k photos referenced to an external hard drive. I want to move up to the LR/PS combo so I can take advantage of editing on my new iPad Pro and having it resynch back to the desktop and laptop BUT… how do I do that without losing what I have in my present catalogue? What would be the best workflow? Now I’ve been copying all photos from a shoot to a folder on the hard drive, then importing them as referenced photos into LR. Will that change? What happens to all prior settings in LR 5? Other concerns are if the external had is filled with almost a TB of files, do I need to purchase more than the 20GB given in New LR? Does everything synch to the cloud or just new shoots I want to work on? Will the edited versions still remain in the one catalog that I have? Sooo confused!
just updated Lightroom in Photo Merge I had focus stacking this is now gone do you know where it went or did they take it out of Lightroom?
Hi gerry. Lr never has focus stacking before. It’s been in PS for years though… under the edit menu.
I assume this has nothing to do with those of us running Lightroom 6 desktop version with perpetual license?
I am getting more and more frustrated and angry with the built in obsolescence by Apple and Adobe. First Apple won’t support the older machines (MacPro 4.1) with the new OS and now Adobe won’t support older operating systems. We are being blackmailed into purchasing new hardware when in fact the hardware we have is more than sufficient. This is nothing more than conspicuous consumerism. I raised this Issue with Skylum (then MacPhun) upon release of Aurora 2017 and they stepped it back and supported El Capitan OS, kudos to Skylum. I guess I’m done with Adobe and switching over to Skylum products in total.
You’re obviously wanting to upgrade your Adobe LR and/or PS, or else support for an older operating system wouldn’t be a requirement. So if you’re willing to upgrade LR and/or PS, why wouldn’t you be willing to upgrade your PC or Mac?
The reason why computers and Adobe programs become obsolete is because people like you and me are continuously clamouring for new features and faster program operation. Many of these new features are simply not feasible without upgrades to the programs, and yes, often to the computer operating systems as well.
Thanks for answering that Allen – I realize it’s frustrating to people, but there’s not some secret conspiracy behind it. Like you said, it’s all of us that want the latest and greatest features. Programs that have backward support for old operating systems are also the slowest programs out there (Aurora 2017 case in point) 🙂
Thank you Allen and Matt for the replies. No, I don’t want or need to upgrade, either hardware or software, not looking for the magic bullet, just some sanity. Other programs have cut off older HW and OS as well, case in point is Intuit’s TurboTax, which I have used for over 30 years. There are no options for TurboTax as you need the updated program for the forms and tax laws. Just feeling old, sorry for the rant.
By the way Dave, this isn’t blackmail. It’s Just like when my cable company releases a new cable box that let’s me record 20 shows at once, instead of the 2 shows I can do with my box now (because they’ve updated their hardware and taken advantage of technology enhancements that didn’t exist earlier). For more money, I can choose to upgrade to it, or I can choose to stay on what I have and what I originally paid for. Nobody is taking what you originally paid for away, and forcing you to upgrade. This is life in technology and it always has been. It’s not an Apple/Adobe thing. Google and Windows do the same exact thing if you do some research.
I agree with Dave, Apple automatically upgraded me to High Sierra, which then no longer supported my Canon 7D MkII, LR has had updates in the past that has had people lose their catalogues. My cell phone also has auto updates which causes me to reset everything. And now the Mac want to change to Mohave. I am not ok with auto updates, just to get a little faster. Most of these sites do not give us the choice.
Hi Diana. Not sure if you knew but you actually do have a choice. You can turn it off on all of your devices. My computer, my laptop and my phone all have auto updates turned off so I don’t use it until I feel comfortable I’m ready.
Many thanks for your update Matt
I am using LR Classic CC V8.0, my question concerns the wb (white balance) in the Develop Basic menu, for some reason I only have ‘As Shot’, Custom, or ‘Auto’, I have seen some lessons where the program has multiple items on the drop down menu, like ‘flourescent’, daylight’ etc, how can I add these to my version?
Many thanks & I love the videos
Depends whether you are loading a RAW file or JPEG.
thats because your files are in Jpeg, if you shoot RAW then you will have all these options
Hi. That’s because you’re looking at a JPG and white balance as already baked in, in the camera. If you use a raw or DNG it will change. Thanks!
When will Lightroom do the HDR pano and when I go to the develop module all the sliders will be sitting in the middle?
When you don’t check the Auto Correct checkbox 🙂
The Sony R111 is awesome; unfortunately, I have a host of dollars invested in Canon equipment. Can’t take it with you so Canon, move over. New sheriff in town.
I am using macOS High Sierra and did not receive the photoshop upgrade notice. did get the Lightroom
I also have one Mac running High Sierra and got all updates.
I have Microsoft operating system 8.1.
I received the Camera raw update but not the Lightroom 8?
Do I need a different operating system upgrade to utilize the new version LR *?
Windows 8 is no longer supported.
forcing you to upgrade your system. i bought my lr, too bad they don’t update anymore, so, will be moving to another program to edit my pics, with great regret.
