What You’ll Learn

Sky Selection Techniques

Everything starts with a selection / mask. Learn the best ways to select and target the sky for your adjustments. We’ll go over some of the usual ways that are simple and fast, but we’ll also cover some more advanced techniques that you can use when you have a sky that won’t cooperate.

Exposure, Brightness and Tone

After we learn how to select the sky, one of the first things we’ll need to do is adjust the brightness and tone. Not only will you learn how to balance the sky to get the exposure just where you want it, but you’ll learn what tools can hurt your sky and which ones you’ll want to avoid as well.

Luminosity Blending Techniques

Learning how to blend skies with based on luminosity and brightness brings your skills up a notch. Since our cameras don’t see what we see, we often see nuances in the sky after we take it that look unbalanced. Sometimes an area is too bright or dark, so it’s up to us to learn how to improve only parts of the sky.

Advanced Color and Mood

Color is arguably one of the most important parts of the sky. We’ll cover basic color adjustments along with some of the most advanced. That way, you’ll have a wide set of tools that you can use based on what you need for that photo.

Realistic Sky Replacements

Seamlessly replace skies in Photoshop for more dynamic and visually stunning images. This section covers the Sky Replacement Tool and blending tricks to ensure natural and realistic results by harmonizing the colors. Perfect for photos where they sky didn’t cooperate and you can’t just go shoot again.

Create Your Own Skies with AI

Create realistic skies from scratch using AI and Photoshop. This section covers AI-powered toolsgradient techniques, and customization to create unique skies. Great for photographers who can’t always get out to shoot but want to have some fun with their skies and old photos again.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this course a subscription?

No. It is a one time purchase. You buy it, and you own it forever. You can download it directly to your computer or log in and stream online. You get both with your purchase.

Do you use Lightroom or Photoshop?

The course uses both. SkyCraft Essentials ™ uses Lightroom Classic to edit most skies. However, I do include a video that shows how the same things can be done in Lightroom and/or Adobe Camera Raw. Remember, the edits in those 3 apps are all the same, work the same, and produce the same results.

However, Part 2 (SkyChanger Pro™) uses Photoshop because Sky Replacement is not possible in either version of Lightroom. And Part 3 (SkyCreator Studio™) will talk about 3rd part tools as well as Photoshop.

Do you cover night and astrophotography photos?

I do have one lesson where I edit a night star photos from start to finish, but this is not a night/astro photo course. This is most targeted toward landscape, nature and outdoor photographers for daytime and sunrise/sunset photos.

What software versions will I need?

This course is created for the 2025 versions of Lightroom and Photoshop, though every feature I cover has been around for at least a year.

Q. Why does Part 3 (Sky Creator Studio) have a $$ next to it?

In part 3 I go over various ways to create your own skies using Generative AI. While Adobe has Generative AI (it’s called Firefly), and it can create a sky for you, it’s not ideal. There are other tools out there that are better and some of them do have a fee. So I’ll show you various ways to use both free and paid options, but I just wanted you to know that to get the best results you’re going to want to use one of the paid options.

What skill is this course aimed at?

Like nearly all of my editing courses, the skill level is late beginner to intermediate. If you watch me edit, you’ll see I don’t use complicated tools.

I really believe the magic is knowing WHAT TO DO with the tools… not knowing MORE tools as a whole.

If you know the basics of using the editing controls in Lightroom and how to use Layers, selections, and brushes in Photoshop you have all you need to follow this course.

Will you talk about Cloud brushes in Photoshop?

No. I don’t believe cloud brushes look realistic. Sure, I’ve seen some that look okay but they look too patterned and repeated when used in an entire sky.

The way I see it is that if you’re okay using a cloud brush to put clouds in a sky, then go ahead and do it the best way be replacing the sky with clouds alltogether 🙂

If you came to this page from an email I sent, you are already on my list. Please do not fill out the form below or you will get added twice. Thanks!
