Happy Friday everyone! Most of my tutorials come from actual things that I do to my photos. Well, the other day I took my camera out for a walk on the “Osprey Trail” at a place called Honeymoon Island near my home. When I got back, I liked the way this branch actually framed the Osprey, but I thought it was a little too close so that’s where this tutorial was born. Enjoy!
Adding Space Between “Stuff” in Photoshop

Matt, in your tutorials about basic editing in Ps, I see that you recommend removing distractions, maybe smoothing skin wrinkles, etc. on a blank new layer to be non-destructive. I have been doing these on a copy of the background layer (using Ctrl-J ) rather than a blank layer. Is there an advantage or disadvantage of one over the other? Thanks.
Hi Bruce. Nope. Whatever works in your workflow. A blank layer will probably be a little smaller in file size but that’s not a reason to change your workflow. Two different ways to do the exact same thing with the same results. Thanks.
Matt, I am running into a problem with this error message. Any advice as to why? “Could not rasterize because the pixel data for this layer is not directly editable.”
Thank you.
Thanks Matt, good tip about using Puppet Warp for branches!
Hi Matt, great video. Something I will use often. Matt, how about eliminating unwanted space between
items!!
Thanks Matt. Another interesting tutorial. It is good to see how to use tools in Photoshop that I haven’t come across yet.
Another great tip/video. Thanks again!!
love the tip
Thank you Matt. Always pick up one or two things I didn’t know. You are very easy to understand!
Great tip, Matt! Always enjoy your explanations of various options and particularly the Puppet Warp will be very useful.
Thank you again, Matt.
For some reason, Matt, my Tools in PS don’t seem to work the same way as yours. For example, I have the Patch Tool separate; the Spot Healing Brush Tool separate; the Healing Brush tool separate. My PS is version 22.2.0 release. Any ideas?
Hi Eric – go to the top menu to EDIT > TOOLBAR. Poke around in there and maybe reset to defaults. At some point you’ve customized and moved things around your toolbar. Good luck!
Thanks Matt. That fixed it. Cheers.
Good stuff, Matt. Love these little short video tips. Keep ’em coming.
Thanks Matt, your tutorials are always “straight forward” and you give us more than on option. With so many YouTube channels offering free Photoshop and Lightroom tutorials, I always seem to come back to your channel…love you style of teaching, you keep it simple. Thanks so much!!
Another possibility would be to eliminate the branch like you did originally and put that version on its own layer. You can then hide that layer, move the branch using puppet warp, position the layer below the puppet warp layer, show it and the hole would be filled very nicely.
Great tutorial, as always. Thanks!
Thanks Matt, always enjoy your tutorials, very informative. All the best from Wexford in Ireland, Chris.
Thank you! Subscribed because I find your tutorials very helpful and you are so pleasant to listen to.
GREAT, Matt, and thanks for solving a frequent problem!
Great tutorial once again Matt. Very inspiring and useful. Thank you.
Thank you again Matt.
As always, something always new and exciting

Thanks Matt. New idea for the tool box.
Another great tutorial Matt and glad your team won the Super Bowl, Just realize how much New England contributed to this with the Goat and Gronk. Our loss is certainly a big gain for Tampa. Your welcome.
Thanks! 🙂
Excellent tutorial, Matt. I could see this being helpful in some of my Costa Rica pics. Thank you! ?
Thanks for the puppet tool information. I knew it once but forgot! When you have a “hole” have you ever put a blank layer below and colored it in to match? Maybe that’s too much work.
Enjoyed the tip, got a few images I can use it on right now. Also I am in the middle of your Photoshop System course which is really helping me keep up with the tips you give. Thanks the course is great.
Great tip Matt, I’ve never used the puppet warp tool before may have a use for it now, thanks much.
I did have this issue when using the puppet warp tool before and now I know thanks to you.
Great tip. Can’t wait to try it.
Excellent , as always !!!
More great tips! I can see I’ll be referring back to this tutorial many times.
Thank you!!
I like the new look of your office. Warmly lit. Did you move to another room or rearrange what was there?
Thanks Dan! Rearranged but same space.
Thank you Matt a usual awesome tutorial on photoshop. is there a course any where to learn more about PS and all of the photo miracle you can do with it.
Thanks
Hi. Yes my Photoshop System course is a great place to start.

Thx!
This worked nicely with a clean one color background but what happens if the background is cluttered or multi colored?
Hi. First I’d suggest trying it as nothing will beat experience and experimentation to answer your question. But… It’ll change based on every photo but that’s why I showed several ways to do it. And if the background is just plain bad or cluttered, then I’m not sure it’s a photo worth spending the time on. Good photography trumps all. We use Photoshop to change a few things to help make it better, but had the background not been clean on this, I wouldn’t have been showing off the photo in the first place if that makes sense. Thanks!
Always good to watch a master of the software… makes me realize how much I don’t know… thanks
Great tip Matt, thanks!
Great tutorial once again thank you Matt.
Great tutorial Matt did not know about that tool
Thanks for the tutorial Matt. very helpful.
do you make software for would help me in photoshop as a photographer just for working on photo?
That is smo-o-o-oo-th! Really appreciate that you show two different tools/ways to do this. Another excellent instruction. Thank-you, Matt!
Aside: Did you know that the only natural predator of the Osprey is the Eagle?
Thanks!! Yep! And there’s a HUGE Eagles nest at the end of this trail I was on. But the Osprey far outnumber the Eagles there so I’m guessing they stay away from each other.
There is an Osprey nest in my neighbourhood where a couple raises one or two fledglings each year. But there are Eagles not too far away. ‘Surf & turf’ wars happen, occasionally – but not often. Spectacular hunters, fighters, and parents!
Thank you for the tutorial, Matt.
Great tutorial. Thanks, Matt.
Matt… wait… I see you have the EXACT same tool in your toolbar as the Refs in the Super Bowl… “Insert Penalty Flag”
Weird. Must be a Tampa thing.
