A few weeks ago I released a video talking about some changes to the way we “Save As” in Photoshop. This was specifically for people who opened a photo in to Photoshop, and wanted to save, say, a JPG. It wasn’t really anything directed toward a Lightroom > Photoshop workflow.
Anyway, most people weren’t really happy with the change but it looks like Adobe listened and gave us a way to get back the old functionality that we wanted. I go over how to get those changes in this video. Enjoy!
Thank you, thank you! This was driving me crazy. So appreciate the easy fix you explained.
Matt, thanks for taking the time to share your info.
This explains a lot. Thought I was doing something wrong.
I wasn’t going crazy after all trying to find the jpeg file type when saving.
But i did find Export – Quick Export as jpg
Thank you for this. I did not know that they had done this on purpose and thought my computer was having issues. I hated what is was doing. Especially the not being able to save as a jpeg. Very helpful.
THANKS SO MUCH! Now i am wondering how many original files I have overwritten since the change. 🙁
Why do programmers have to meddle with what works? If it isn’t broke, don’t fix it! I appreciate the new features Adobe adds to it’s programs and we are able to update our Photoshop versions when new features come out. But changing the fundamental uses of brushes, saves, libraries, etc., that’s just not kosher.
AMEN!!!!
Thanks! Reminds me of “New” Coke. Sometimes people just just aren’t good with the way things have been for years and worked so well.
Thank you so much!! I couldn’t figure out why it was making me do that “save a copy” thing all of a sudden. Really appreciate the work around!
Thank you so much Matt 🙂 so, so happy to get back to normal, hated that crazy change!
Thanks! it’s terrific when someone else not only feels ‘improvements’ are not for the better — but tells you how to undo them! I was afraid from watching the video that removing the word ‘copy’ was unavoidable when you chose ‘legacy’ and that using the ‘duplicate’ option would also be devoid of the word ‘copy’ which could be disastrous. But duplicates still have ‘copy’ in their names so all is good.
This initial Photoshop behavior change is just one more example of how often current software developers/program managers DON’T UNDERSTAND OR CARE ABOUT LEGACY BEHAVIOR and its POTENTIAL IMPACT (as seen herein).
Thanks, Matt! I thought I would be living with this from now on.
I HATED [OK, I actually found it repugnant] the change!! Love the fix!! Thanks for the heads up, that’s one of the many reasons I follow you & Blake!!
It’s refreshing to see the programmers respond quickly when customers provide prompt inputs.
Now, if they would just add a rectangular selection tool to the radial filter option in LR (like PS’s rect. marquee). that too would be nice !!
Yeah! My Actions work again!
Why does mine say the file name-edit though when I save as? So I end up having to delete that word. I’m saving as a tiff with layers
Thank you for your knowledge!
If you have “Edit” appended, you have opened a photo in which a program put “Edit” there (LR or other plug-ins do this). This is not a Photoshop thing though, it’s something you’ve done at some point in your workflow. Hope that helps.
Thanks for this PSA Matt. Mine says Edit as well instead of Copy. I have not changed my workflow, it just started happening one fine day about 2 weeks ago and is driving me crazy. I have not added any new plug-ins, using the same ones I always use: Topaz Sharpen, Topaz Studio, Topaz DeNoise. Ugh!!!!
Hi Julie – if you see Edit you are most likely editing a photo that you opened in Photoshop from Lightroom. Photoshop will not add the word edit, but if you came to Photoshop from LR, LR’s preferences by default (which you can change) will add the word edit to delineate the photo from the original. Hope that helps.
Thank you so much for the info. Have not been in Photoshop since the updates so I am sure I would have been scratching my head on this one.
Hey Thanks so much. You saved my agony.
I was planning to spend another two hours contacting Adobe to find out what was going on. Now I don’t have to!!
Much appreciated
i was just dealing with it as if i couldnt help it, youre the man!
I thought I was crazy. Thanks for the help.
Yay!
Thank you so much. I couldn’t figure out why I couldn’t save as a jpg. It was driving me crazy.
But I like that I now get the copy back in Lightroom by default, and PS doesn’t ask if I want to save the raw file. In fact it seems to replace the raw with the jpeg in the active window.
Hi. No Lightroom > Photoshop workflow has changed in this update. It works the same as it always did.
Thank you–it works great!
thank goodness! that was one of the dumbest change ever.
