Composition Quiz
Hi all. I have a fun 8 Question Composition Quiz for you. It’s just for fun, but who knows… you may learn a tip or two as well. Enjoy!
Remember… this is for fun! So if you’re gonna nitpick my questions/answers I’ll probably make fun of you, and remind you I wrote “generally” about 50 times during this quiz.
As soon as you learn a rule, you find a reason to break it. I’m sure a few of you will disagree with my answers or thoughts and that’s totally okay… Next time, you can make your own quiz on your own website. ? Enjoy!

How WILL YOU Learn?
Find out more about my new way to teach composition (45 – 60 seconds each)
Step 1: Reviewing Photos That Span Over 15 Years
The first way I’ll teach you composition is by reviewing my photos (and others) as we cover each concept in composition. You’ll see real examples of how these concepts are put to practice in multiple locations.
Step 2: Through the Camera Lens Videos
Lessons that have “In the field” videos are done by watching me compose a scene through the lens. You’ll see what the camera sees as I move the camera and change position and focal length.
Step 3: Self-Paced Assignements
I have a hard truth for you… you can’t get better at this stuff just by watching videos. You have to put in the effort and these (self-paced) assignments will help guide you.
Make this Your Best Photography Year Yet!
“This course will teach you compositional concepts that will last a lifetime and always keep you challenged.”
What does “Learn Composition for Life!” really mean?
It means this course will teach you the fundamentals of how to see. My favorite composition quote is from Elliott Erwitt who said:
“To me, photography is an art of observation. It’s about finding something interesting in an ordinary place…. I’ve found it has little to do with the things you see and EVERYTHING TO DO WITH THE WAY YOU SEE THEM.”
These lessons will get to the roots of seeing good composition and will make you better equipped to make great photos anywhere – not just in the amazing National Parks, and/or hard-to-reach locations that many other courses concentrate on.
I really think this is the right course for right now – the timing is perfect.
Since many people are comfortable traveling again, I think the concepts you learn from this course will prepare you for all of the places you want to go.
However, in general (and having ABSOLUTELY nothing to do with recent events), NOT everyone can travel to iconic locations all of the time.
AND THE PROBLEM IS THAT SO MANY COURSES ARE TAUGHT USING THESE ICONIC LOCATIONS.
My goal with “Inside the Composition” is to teach you how to SEE so that you can make an interesting, unique, and beautiful compositions where ever you are.
In fact, my favorite stories are when people tell me they have a better sense of searching out wonderful photos that may have been waiting nearby, so it’s now easier for them to enjoy photography any time (not just when they travel to an iconic place).
Staying Near Home?… or Traveling?
“For me… composition is about one thing… the way we see things and I want to teach you how to see things in a different and more interesting way than you’re used to.”
Self-Paced Assignments that will get you to take action
You already know this, but I’ll say it again… YOU CAN’T GET BETTER WITHOUT PRACTICE
Watching the videos is a great start. But I’ve carefully put together assignements for most of those videos to get you to take action. And that is where you’ll improve!
These are self paced practice assignments. They don’t require travel (although you can if you want) and often involve you reviewing your own photos with a purposeful eye toward a specific improvement you can make. Some people have said this was their favorite part of the course.

Frequently asked questions
HOW CAN I WATCH THIS COURSE? ONLINE OR DOWNLOAD? HOW MANY COMPUTERS?
The course is available to stream online through mattk.com and you’ll have lifetime access. You can watch it online on up to two computers at the same time.
In most of my courses I give you the option to download the course to your computer as well. However, due to the large size and high quality videos in this course it is VERY large.
We can still allow you to download the course, however, you’ll have to manually request access by contacting support. And keep in mind the videos are large and will take a while to download (over 10 Gigabytes of files).
YOU SAY THIS COURSE IS ABOUT SEEING? IS IT FOR BEGINNERS OR ADVANCED?
This course is for all skill levels. It’s about confidence. If you have a hard time seeing compositional concepts while you’re out shooting then this is for you. It’s not technical. And if you’re some one that always thinks in terms of f-stops, hyperfocal distance, difraction of lenses, and things along those lines… well, you may need it the most. I get questions from people that know WAY more than I do in photography technical terms. And every time I look at their portfolio I realize they have concentrated on the technical and forgotten about the creative. So if you’re a beginner or advanced photographer, this course can help.
WHAT TYPE OF PHOTOGRAPHY DOES THIS COVER?
This is mostly about compositional techniques for landscpae, nature and outdoor photographers (and a little wildlife). To put it simply… here are some genres that ARE NOT covered at all: Street photography, portrait photography, food photography, car photography, macro photography. However, some concepts apply to anything.
A lot of people ask about Astrophotography. This is not a camera settings class, so nothing about settings are covered. However, compositional rules apply to astrophotography photos as well, so you can use much of what you learn here for that too.
WILL THIS COURSE TEACH ME WHAT F-STOP TO USE OR HOW TO FOCUS?
No, this is not a technical photography course. There are plenty of those and I promise you… technical details are NOT what’s holding you back. It will teach you about how to use f-stops creatively for composition but it will not teach you what f-stop to use or how or where to focus in the photo to get sharp photos. You’ll want to research focus stacking or other photography concepts if that’s what you’re looking for.
DO I HAVE TO START THIS COURSE ON A CERTAIN DAY OR FOLLOW A SCHEDULE?
No, not at all. This is self-paced. When you purchase the course you’ll have lifetime access to it. You can watch them at any time, on your own schedule. There are no specific dates that you need to follow.
HOW LONG WILL THIS COURSE TAKE?
The course is 21 modules. Each module will take you anywhere from 15-30 minutes to watch. They’re not meant to binge, but rather to watch one module each day or two – and absorb (and practice) that concept that you learned. Once you watch the module, how long you decide to use the practice assignments for is up to you but plan on a module taking you about an hour between watching the video and practicing.
IS THIS A LIGHTROOM OR PHOTOSHOP COURSE?
No, this is not a post processing course. However, at checkout, you will have the option to purchase an add-on of the raw files I shoot in the field during this course along with how I edit them in Lightroom and Photoshop.
HOW EXACTLY WILL YOU TEACH ME COMPOSITION?
Each module contains a core concept video, where I sit down and show photo examples that span 15 years of my photography and how we can learn what works and doesn’t work from looking at photos from all different locations (not just one national park).
Some modules contain an “Inside the Composition” or “in the Field” video where you get to see me out on location (normal places, not iconic landscapes), and you get to actually look through my camera as I move around and change focal lenth so you see exactly what the camera is seeing and how/why I compose the photo I did.
Finally, most modules contain an assignment for you to follow through to make these concepts your own. Remember, it is impossible to get better without PRACTICE. And these assignements are your roadmap to get there.
IS THIS A SUBSCRIPTION?
Nope. It’s a one time purchase. You will download these videos to your computer (or watch them online) and you can keep them and watch them whenever you’d like.
