Here’s a really popular technique I see a lot in landscape photos so I figured I’d share my take on it. Below is the Lightroom/Photoshop version of it, but right below that is the ON1 Version as well. Enjoy!
The Orton Effect in Lightroom and Photoshop
The Orton Effect in ON1 Photo Raw 2018
ON1 actually has a built in filter that will give you something similar with this effect. I’ll show that one first, but then I dive in to how you can create this on your own with Filter layers in Effects.
Very educational, thank you for posting the video’s!
Nice work Matt. Thoroughly enjoyed the content. Thanks for sharing these great tutorials.
Thank you Matt. I learned a lot from your video’s. I could sit here all night, and watch your video’s. You certainly know what your doing.
Are you getting any rain over there? We get it every day here in Clearwater.
Genius, Matt! – as always. Great explanations. The only thing one could add would be that it’s useful – most especially with the second Photoshop version (with the Smart Objects) – to record the whole process as an action (Opt-F9 on a Mac) and then it can easily be reapplied to subsequent photos, but with the specific adjustments re-editable because of the smart filters (maybe you should do a tutorial video on recording actions?).
One of your best yet!
Thank you
Ian
Thank you for these videos… I love the glow effect in On1 Raw.
Matt,
Thank you very much for the short tutorial. I will try it on my recent shoots of water falls from Mt. Rainier NP.
Matt, love this one. I did not watch the On1 version even though I have On1. One of the few things I do in On1 is to use the Glow filter in On1 and now I can see a way to do something very similar in just LR or LR/PS. Very cool!
Hi Matt: I’m sure Michael Orton appreciates the mention! http://www.michaelortonphotography.com/ortoneffect.html
I developed a similar technique independently about 7 or 8 years ago, then heard about Michael after the fact. If anyone’s interested in a free Lr preset, you can find one here: https://www.wolfnowl.com/2012/08/the-orton-effect-in-lightroom/
Great tutorial. Use on1 and have your tutorials
Matt,
Your video tutorial pertaining to the Orton Effect for ON1 users is incredible. Thanks so much for making material like this available to us. I am currently holding monthly two hour meetings devoted entirely to teaching ON1. Your material is being put to great use in these presentations. The meetings are free and are open to the general public. These presentations are part of our digital groups efforts to help others to enjoy our fantastic hobby. The group is called DIGITS and our website is mgdigits.com.
Loved your video, appreciate any and all help. I will be attempting to use this on my photos.
Thank you, I have added glow a lot of times, but your second way will come in handy as there is more control.
Thank you Matt. I really enjoy your tutorials. I have recently started using On1, and your tutorials have been a huge help. Please keep doing what you’re doing. A lot of times when my daughter is adding filters on her photos that are supposed to mimmick old styles, they just look, I don’t know…kinda yuck, but this technique has some finesse to it, and the results are beautiful. As you were working, I thought of a couple photos that I will try this with. Thanks again!
You’re welcome Vikki.
whaw !
A LR+PS course in 20 minutes 🙂

best regards

Matt – Thanks for including an On1 Raw demo of this effect. Great demo. Thanks again!! Keep. Them coming. BTW, Love the “light ON1 course”.
Thanks James. Glad you’re liking the course 🙂
Thanks Matt – very helpful. Much appreciated.
Thanks Matt. I found this very interesting and useful. I really appreciate your style of teaching ideas. I have purchased some of your video courses and really enjoy them. Cheers.
WOW very nicely done! I really like your style “freelance” it is amazing how many different ways to make one photo into thousand different schemes and scenes. Thanks Matt
Thanks, Matt. I have been playing around with this effect for a couple of years after discovering it. But I never had a plan for how to do it. I just played around. Sometimes it worked. Sometimes it didn’t. This was very helpful, and I learned some other good tricks to use with other shots that I was not even considering trying Orton on.
Forgot to mention that I have been using On1.
Hi! Good video. In film days I used to make two exposures on one image in B/W, one sharp, and one with a diffuser. I t gave a similar effect to what you’re doing here. Interesting idea to use on scenic to print on canvas, for instance.
Hi Matt,
I really like these “How to ” Videos you do. I only have Photoshop 13 and I only shoot Jpegs. You refer to “Raw’ often, but can this technique be applied using Jpegs , or do I need to shoot in Raw ?
Jerry
Sure thing Gerald. Raw or JPG wouldn’t make any difference in this case. The only time raw makes a difference is if you’ve blown out highlights or have super dark shadows or bad color balance. It’s not any sharper or better than a JPG though. Thanks!
