Hi all. I’ve gotten a lot of questions on whether or not you can use the masking tools in Lightroom and Camera Raw with the new AI Noise Reduction. While there is a Noise adjustment in the masking tools, it doesn’t work the way you think, so we’ll talk about a slightly clunky (but very usable) workaround in this video.Â

This was really interesting , I am in the near future going to purchase your photoshop course whereby you will show all the tools NOT needed. Having watched this and others my only concern is as with all experts its all to fast ,opacity, layers , do this do that. I am forever rewinding and playing again. I do follow one more You Tube Photography tutor and the pace is perfect. I do want to get to grips with photoshop, so the video I have mentioned will I hope start to get me there . Having said all this , no disrespect to your knowledge and skills. Thanks for posting and I’ll watch again.
Hi Colin. I’ve found my “pace” over the years and it works for the majority of people. But I’ve learned you can never make everyone happy. And if you try to make everyone happy, you end up making no one happy. These videos are a good gauge of my pace, so if it’s too fast for you I would advise against my courses. That said, the Photoshop course is for beginners so while my pace is the same, I don’t present too much information at once since it’s a beginner video. The video you just watched and are commenting on is not a beginners video. Thanks.
That you Matt for your response. Have to say makes sense.
info on how to use new noise in detail
Hi. Watch the videos in the Tutorials menu.
As always, I learn something from each of your videos. Thanks!
Great tutorial!
great tip Matt
Great tutorial. Your explanation, as usual, is greatly appreciated.
Great content – I love the way you explain Lr and Ps!
How is it that in PS RAW that I do not have the denoise option?
I have the latest version installed. My image is a RAW right from the camera. I go to masking, subject or object button, and scroll down to details. There is no new denoise button/slider. just the old way. Do I need to contact Adobe to sort this one out?
Great explanation of how to use this new tool.
Great tutorial. Clarifies the work flow.
Hi. Check the FAQ about DeNoise on my blog. Thanks.
Wonderful to see this demonstration .
It seems to me that with this new AI Denoise feature in PS and LrC at the very forefront of any instructional video or tutorial should be mention of the fact that Denoise does not work with PSD or JPEG images. Is that correct? If so, what kind of images does it work on? I note mention of DNG images, but I really do not understand what a DNG image is. Can a PSD or JPEG image be converted to a DNG image so that the new Denoise feature can be utilized? Having been laid up for a while, I got behind in what’s new these days with PS and LrC and have not really been able to view or find even one tutorial on the new Denoise that deals with my questions herein. Thank you.
At its current state of development, Lightroom’s AI Denoise filter only works on camera-generated RAW images (e.g., Canon RAW files typically have a .CR2 or .CR3 extension, Nikon .NEF, Fujifilm .RAF, etc.). DNG stands for digital negative, a universal RAW format developed by Adobe which is camera-independent and thus generated by software. Although camera-generated RAW files can be converted to DNG files (as happens, for example, after processing a camera native RAW image with the Denoise filter), once converted they are no longer supported by the Lightroom AI Denoise filter at the present time. Similarly, JPG, TIFF, and PSD are not yet supported.
I import my Nikon raw (NEF) file into Lightroom and have LR convert all to DNG. The LR Denoise works perfectly on these files.
Thanks! Well done and described.
Another excellent tutorial. Thanks so much!
