Hi everyone. To help celebrate my new course on Texture Blending, I’m opening up a texture blending challenge this week. This is a FREE photo challenge where you can enter as many images as you’d like. In fact, I’ll be doing videos throughout the week where I review some photos submitted, and then give feedback in hopes that you’ll either 1) Resubmit or… 2) Submit a whole new image as you learn more.
You can find an intro video that goes over all of the details with links to everything over on the page. Overall, my hopes are that you can have fun with this. Don’t overthink it, don’t worry about what size or color space, or anything like that. Just find some photos, download my free texture (or use your own) and have fun. Enjoy!
Matt. you have given my muse new life. I’m practicing with this course and the PS course. Dropping my animals into wild flowers field texturized a bit with an added mask in front as a few flowering stems for foreground. I’m not sure of the Smart Object tool when compositing what that work flow would like like, work each component separately as a smart object including the masking then pull them into a new file and finish Am I making sense ?
Hi. I don’t fully understand the question but I don’t typically use smart objects so I’m probably not ever going to be a big fan of that workflow 🙂 Thanks and glad you are liking it!
Oops. never mind. I watch the next lesson and now understand SO isn’t for this application cause I’m a brusher.
Hi Matt – 23 May 2020
Are you still able to help those of us who bought your texture blending course?
I have had a bit of a struggle with the Instructions for Photo Raw. The masking kept failing. Then I discovered that one of the Windows 10 updates had reset the graphics drivers. Such, that ON1 was not permitted, to use as much of the graphics card as it need to.
Having updated the graphics drivers from AMD’s website. And having reset the settings in Windows 10 to permit ON1 to make heavy use of the Graphics Card.. the masking began to work again. – Hurahh for Photo Raw :-), – Boo for Windows 10 updates :-{
If the challenge is closed, is there a way to submit an image to you for some advice and help?
Best wishes David Price
Hi David – sure feel free to post a link to an image and I can give you a quick review.
Matt, this is the greatest. I have been able to mix my photography with a new love of being creative. I have always envied artist that can paint what they see. This is my new form of painting. I am still in the early stages of learning but the compliments on my Instagram have been so awesome. Thank you Matt so much. I bought both wildlife and landscape and look so forward to each new lesson.
Each time I experimented with textures, it got better. It takes practice. Ended up buying the course, so I can learn whatever other tricks you share! Did you pick a winner? No word from you about that since the last video! It had to be hard to choose – I watched the whole slideshow last night and there are some terrific submissions. I could see that some were able to better apply the textures than others, that is, they used them to enhance the subject in addition to hiding a background.
I finally got a great image. I was the guy on Friday that could not get to paint with white on the first layer mask so just watched the rest of the class. Anyway. I really enjoyed this
Matt,
Submitted 3 images for the challenge, yet did not produce the results which I was looking far. My problem was with your instructions. I followed them to the “T”at least I think that I did. I did not get the effects that you did. Perhaps, this is because I am using Windows 10. This is the only explanation which I have.
I have purchased your Wildlife Blending and Texture course and will continue my efforts to improve. If I can get a handle on this, it’s going to wonderful. Keep up the great work.
Hi Bill. Sorry you’re having trouble with it. That’s a tough one. The process has taken me years to work on and I still get images that don’t look right. Looking at how it’s done is one thing… actually doing it and perfecting the technique and all of the little nuances around it does take practice. Keep at it and I think you’ll see improvements. Thanks!
Hay Matt,
I think that I’ve got it straightened out. Looking good. Thanks
Bill
