The latest update to Lightroom Classic, Lightroom and Photoshop (Camera Raw) just made some already amazing masking tools, even better. As I started using these new tools, I realized that even though Adobe calls them “Landscape” masks, they work great for anything outdoors. Hopefully the video below gives you a good introduction to them. Enjoy!
Free Preset (You’ll hear about this in the video)
The video below mentions a free preset. The link mentioned and sign up form are ONLY for new people. If you made it to this page, you came from an email from me. In that case, there’s no reason to sign up. Just click here to download the free preset and install instructions since you’re already part of my email community. (Note: You’ll need to have the latest versions of Lightroom or Photoshop installed for this to work. If you have trouble getting the latest versions to download please contact Adobe. I will not be able to give support on this free preset or to help you download Adobe’s apps).

Many thanks, as always very useful.
Thanks for the help. Great way to improve the masks.
I had seen this in Lightroom but didn’t know how to use it effectively. Thank you, this is fantastic information.
Thanks Matt, great information.
Awesome. Thank you for the quick tips on these new masking functions!!
Thanks A Lot Matt !! Great information !!
Thanks A Lot Matt !! Great information
I’m using the latest version of Lightroom Classic with the Landscape masking option. When I click on the masking icon and select Landscape, the Masks box shows up with the circled + sign for Create New Mask and the Black-filled box labeled ‘New Mask’, but there is no box labeled ‘New Landscape’. When I check all the Landscape Mask Options and click on the Create Mask button, 4 masks are created (Vegetation, Water, Artificial Ground, and Natural Ground). When I select any one of these masks, I do not get the two options to ‘Add’ and ‘Subtract’. I cannot find a way to get these boxes to appear, so I cannot improve on the selections they way you show in the video.
Thanks for the update!!
Great thank you
Thanks
Thanks!
I’ll give it a try. Thanks.
Matt, you are so helpful and your courses and presets are always great!
Great Matt thank you
Hahahah, this is the lake of Bled in Slovenien! I am living just near!!!
See you Matt.

Nice, thanks for the update info
Matt, thank you. I truly appreciate all that you do (and that you have done through the many years I’ve been following you) to keep us informed and in step with the updates from Adobe.
A wealth of knowledge as usual! Thanks, Matt.
Excellent as always Matt
Looks promising
Fantastic as always! Thanks Matt
Adobe should have called it “Outdoors” instead of “Landscape” to describe the new masking tools’ general nature instead of being just for landscape photos.
I kind of agree. That said, I don’t think it changes how or how much they’d be used. If you were going to click on it you’re still going to click on it right? I could critique the name all day, but in reality it’s just a great feature.
Thanks Matt for this quick update to the new changes. Awesome.
Thank you – I love your stuff!
Thank you Matt
Wonderful! Exited to start using this update, Thanks Matt.
WOW!! I just got back from two weeks in Japan for Cherry Blossoms, and I have LOTS of photos to process. This is EXACTLY what I need, as I started doing a Sky adjustment, followed by an inverted Sky adjustment, but that still left a lot of other areas to address. This new feature is perfect for what I’m doing right now. Thanks!!
Great addition from Adobe and, as usual, great presentation. Thanks Matt.
Thank You Matt = Great tips.
Thanks, Matt!
When is adaptive color used in editing this photo.
Do you anticipate Lightroom ever having a sky replacement feature? One of the main reasons I use Photoshop is to replace a sky. That means an additional file which means more disk space used. Also, sometimes I use ON1 Photo Raw for my sky replacements so I can use the reflection option and get clouds reflected in water. It would be nice if Lightroom could do all of that and save some disk space.
thanks. Tried this out on ab image in lightroom classic. Worked great, except the sky selection left noticeable halos, so please steer me to a way to blend/ feather the selection better. I know what to do in Photoshop, just not here. thanks.
so amazing! been working with PS for so many years… we know how tough selections were in the past.
thank you for walking through all this… yay!
Thanks, Matt. I have taken about a year off my photography hobby due to some health issues. When I picked it up again recently, I found myself forgetting how to use a number of the newer editing tools in Lightroom Classic. But using the video examples that you periodically send out, especially on masking, have got me up and running again. Really appreciate your work.
great Video
Thanks
Thank you Matt. I photograph Bald Eagles and their Eaglets at the nest and your tutorial is going to help a great deal. Thank you
thanks for demonstrating this very useful update
Thanks for this Matt – really helps.
Is there a preset that names the masks based on what they are. I notice this happens with Landscape but not with other masks. For example, if I click on people then click on 3 separate masks (ie face, body skin, clothes), it would be nice if the mask named defaulted to face, body skin, clothes instead of mask1, mask2, mask3.
Thanks Matt. Always so great to hear and learn from you on what is new and tips on using.
Very powerful. Thanks for making it easy to grasp.
Thank you Matt. Hope you are playing lots of golf too ๐
Thank you so much!
Cannot wait to have access to this update.
Your enthousiasm is contagious ๐
Matt:
I only shoot black and white. Do these Split AI masks work on black and white.
Hi. I don’t know for sure but you can try out the masks as you see in the video without the presets. If it works, then the presets will work. Thanks.
Love it
My LRC is the February version, 14.2, I think.
Creative Cloud desktop says I’m up to date.
And my subscription to the photo plan is definitely current.
Thoughts on what’s up?
Thanks!
Try restarting and if that doesn’t work you’d want to contact Adobe. Thanks.
In my case, rebooting my computer solved the problem. Others have reported similar experiences
Wow, I need to update my LR today! Do these new AI updates subtract from our “points” if we use them?
Hi. AI selections are not part of Generative Fill credits. Thanks.
Hey Matt
Totally brilliant
Love watching your lessons
Very pertinent and explained well. Terrific as always. Thank you.
Matt, what do think about using this feature on interior architecture, think churches or other interesting interiors?
Hi. As I mentioned in the video… they’ll work on anything outdoors. Give them a try on interiors but nothing in the “Landscape” section to me looks like it’ll work on interiors.
I appreciate your updates, thanks !
Did this new landscape adjustment become available through automatic updates to Lightroom Classic?
Yep. If you have trouble getting the update, you should contact Adobe. Thanks.
Cracking update! Thanks for exploring it for us.
