Hey there! I just released Episode 9 of my Frame of Mind Photography Podcast.
Episode 8 Topic – Is Photography an Art or Not?
In Episode 9, Brian Matiash joins me once again. This week, we chat about misconceptions and myths around Adobe Lightroom (not Classic).
How to Listen/Watch
You can listen to the podcast on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or Google. Or you can watch it below.
The podcast is NOT intended to be visual in any way, so all you’re doing is watching the two of us talk and nothing else. But if that’s the way you prefer it, feel free. Personally, podcasts are something I listen to when I have nothing else to do, or to keep me busy while doing something else – so I never watch them.

PRO TIP: I typically listen to podcasts on my phone while driving or in the gym. And I usually set most podcasts to 1.25x – 1.5x speed to get through it faster.
Since this IS NOT A TRAINING tutorial, and it’s just us talking, I think you can speed us up and get through it faster so feel free to give it a try. I can’t help you find that setting, but again… most podcast apps have it so poke around. If you can use Lightroom and Photoshop I have no doubt you can figure out how to use a podcast app ?
I’ve used Lr(classic) since version #1 was 4 days old – (2007). For a lot of years as a pro.
I used Bridge / Camera Raw / Photoshop workflow a few times but always returned to LrC.
I’m 82 yo, retired and just use my iPhone cameras for fun. A few years worth of photos are now archived.
I’m now down to 200 iPhone images to start my switch to the ‘web’ version.
I actually just finished a Julieanne kost early video on how to organize the images on a phone.
Brian is a new face to me, while Matt (and Scott) is responsible for much of my LR learning.
Just signed up for virtual Lightroom! Can’t wait. Nedra
Hi. The two of you have influenced me to use Lightroom. I’ve been using LrC for 10 years. I take photos with Sony, with iPhone Lr app. When traveling I import raw files to my iPad, do editing. All will ev sync to my hard drive and I continue editing in LRC. That means I have originals and smart previews in my workflow. Now to my issue or question. When importing with iPad the raw file will remain in cloud while also stored on my computer. Are these competing? My issue is that photos I know I’ve edited for years ago now show up in Lightroom as unedited. Any idea why that is so? It seams they get reseted.
Personnaly, I do not use LRC – I don’t need all the extra modules and I certainly do not need the calalogue and previews clogging up my hard drive. But I don’t use LR either. For me, the obvious choice is Bridge followed by Photoshop/Adobe Camera Raw. That route seems to offer everything that LR offeres plus quite a lot more.
I appreciate the simplicity and you should use what works. But bridge and camera raw have previews and a hidden catalog of sorts… so the idea of something “clogging” up your hard drive is still there. It’s just all hidden from you.
Thanks Matt and Brian for answering these questions and clarifying all this.
One thing I’m still not convinced about is what information might be transmitted to Adobe behind the scenes by using “New” Lightroom. Local browsing, ok great, but is a preview sent to Adobe when I open a photo? Is all the exif data sent automatically? GPS data? Are my local images somehow being used to train AI models? How can we be sure none of that happens with our copyrighted work?
Obviously I don’t trust Adobe anymore. I’m pretty convinced that The Cloud is just a rights grab, so Adobe’s attempt to replace Lightroom with a cloud version eliminated any trust I had. And the subscription model doesn’t help, but I’m old-school that way. Now, I’m open to changing my mind, with enough convincing, but I need more than just Local browse mode. I don’t enjoy being a grumpy old coot, but I feel betrayed so hopefully it makes sense.
I truly hope to be enlightened.
Watched your latest onLightroom and then looked at your Bridge video. As you replied to another comment i made a laptop is the route to go.
In Bridge is there a setting to not import duplicates – couldn’t find one.
Also, if switching to Lightroom is it best to turn off and delete synched files in LrC.

“In Bridge is there a setting to not import duplicates – couldn’t find one.”
No, because you do not import anything into Bridge. Bridge just looks at the folders on your drive like a browser does.
there is a photo import tool in Bridge and I understand what Bridge does. Thanks for looking.
Matt & Brian – You guys know I’m very happy working in Lr now. Love not having the catalog. There a couple things I wish for but they are not a big deal. For ME.
I used the LrC print module for the first time in more than a year and remembered right away why there is a love/hate relationship with it. I only needed this because I wanted a fine art style border with some printing to send to an online printer instead of printing here. I still have Matt’s layout presets from forever ago and used one of them. Got it done, but I’ll bet there’s an easier way in PS that I’ll start looking for in your PS class.
Anyway happy and looking forward to watching the class today. And I did hear that “For Children” comment from Scott in the last week or so.
Matt and Brian,
I love the Podcast!
Know that a few folks from Adobe are checking in – and reading the comments!
Thanks Rick!
Matt, in your recent video regarding differences between Lr and LrC you said about Lr: “It has an Edit in Photoshop feature but doesn’t have the option that opens multiple photos at the same time, or Smart Objects.” Regarding the Smart Object part of that comment, can I not just convert that layer to a Smart Object after going to PS and be at the same place? I just want to make sure I am not missing something here. Thanks.
Bob
Great stuff, Matt and Brian! I actually had not even considered this as an option until I got the e-mail today about Matt’s new course and watched the intro video for that. Then I found the link for this podcast episode.
Adobe offering local storage for Lightroom certainly seems to be a game changer. No more catalogs getting corrupt and similar issues from Classic.
I’ve followed both of you many years and enjoy your content. But I have absolutely no interest in plain Lightroom. Sorry.
