Thank you. I didn’t know there’s a solution for that. It has really baffled me why a different layer moves when I’ve selected the correct layer. I thought you just had to be really, really precise on where you click even after selecting the correct layer.
Don’t know if there is a way to change the default–I couldn’t find it. However, if you uncheck the box and quit PS, it will remain unchecked the next time you open PS. The reverse is also true. (P.S. – I am one of those people Matt helped resolve a PS “mystery” this past week by telling me to uncheck the box. Thanks, Matt!)
This button can be an amazing tool when you have so many layers and you are going back and forth between layers and do not have to go to the layers panel everytime. BUT I agree, the auto select should be turned off by default because so many friends – like yours – have been through the “I don’t know what is going on”. It happened to me my first 6 mths of using PS and I was out of my mind trying to figure out why I couldn’t move the selected layer – so totally understand the frustration!
I must have turned mine off a long time ago, because I just checked and it’s off. Another tip is by right clicking with the move tool selected, you can choose which layer you want to move, so that you don’t have to go back to the layers panel every time. (PS CC on Windows)
I love teaching and photography... In that order. I feel that enjoying photography, and photo editing can get WAY too complicated. So my personal mission (and favorite thing to do), is to create education that simplifies the process of taking great photos, and how to edit them to get the results you’ve always wanted.

It seem to be off by default in CS6.
Thank you so much for this! Auto select has been a constant source of frustration for me

What a great tip. Saved me from a lot of frustration! It also made me be more aware of these “hidden trip wires”.
