Lightroom users (Not LR Classic) have wanted more “Edit In Photoshop” features for a while now, and now we’ve got them. In the latest December update to Lightroom, Adobe added some more features to how we can move one (or multiple) images in to Photoshop. Enjoy!

Hi, Matt,
Unless I’m mistaken, Adobe has yet to update Lr with the non-destructive de-noise and the generative expand updates which Photoshop’s Camera Raw received a couple months back. My first thought is that Adobe created Lr nearly two years ago, but now they are sliding on updating it to reflect Camera Raw. But with this latest update dealing with PS interface with Lr, do you think Lr users are being pushed to move editing into PS’s Camera Raw? Basically, where’s Lr headed? Are they taking the simplification out of Lr?
Thanks.
Hi Billy. I think it’s important to remember that Photoshop (Camera Raw) hasn’t actually been updated with this feature. It’s a beta (or tech preview) feature that you need to go turn on if you want to test it out. Camera Raw has been seen to be testing grounds for some raw features it appears. Probably because it’s not as widely used as LR. I would have to think Adobe wants to put this feature in to primetime in Lightroom, as people seem to really like it, but it’s not ready yet. If they rushed it, and it were unstable we’d complain right? 🙂 I wouldn’t read too much in to it not being live yet in LR other than it’s just not ready.
Thanks, Matt. I had not considered that those features are in beta mode for Camera Raw. There is hope then.
I use Lightroom for the Cloud and that really confuses me! Adobe has told me several different names for the Cloud version and Im not sure what to call it?
I don’t have a ton of hard drive space on my laptop and I don’t want to upgrade at the moment.
What differences are there in the Cloud version vs the, what you call, Classic version?
Thanks for your help!
Merry Christmas 🎄
Hi – Opening 2 photos from Lr as layers in Ps worked ok for me but I tried with 4 photos and it was very slow and eventually failed? They are large file sizes so not sure if this is a problem. Are you able to open multiple photos as layers in Ps or is it limited to just 2 ….. which is limiting?
It worked for me and just as fast as LRC.
When I download your video so that I can study it later. When I open it later it is not in English?????????
Hi. These videos are not downloadable.
Hi, Matt!
Well, you have finally convinced me to switch from LrC to Lr. I watched your ‘Evolving with Lightroom’ videos. Everything seems okay, however, I think you did NOT mention one thing: how to save changes done in the cloud to the computer to have them also there just in case.
Greetings,
Wladyslaw 🙂
Hi. That feature doesn’t exist. Thanks!
Thanks, Matt,
Great tutorial, as always.
Question: Can you export an album from Lightroom to another JPEG folder as I do from Lightroom Classic? I do this to create a slideshow in “Pictures To EXE.”
Happy Christmas to you and all your family.
Michael
Hi Michael. You an export anything you want to whatever format you want. Thanks.
Thank you very much.

I like Lr and would use it routinely instead of LrC but for one thing; its hobbled search facility. LrC’s library filter is outstanding, and even Bridge lets you search by multiple parameters through nested folders (not as slick as LrC but it’s doable). Lr only lets you search images by a limited number of criteria, within a single folder. Thanking you in advance, Adobe 😉
If you search then yes, it doesn’t have all the features. My photos in are descriptive folders and starred or “picked” so that’s all the search I’ve ever needed even when using LRC. Thanks.
Hi Matt, Have you found that the performance when editing in LR is better, faster, then LRC for very large files like from Sony A7RV or there is no difference at all? Thanks
Hi Mario. I haven’t noticed a difference.
I wish you alternated Lightroom and PS. I don’t use Lightroom, so I’d appreciate that.
You’ve got me thinking about moving from LrC to LR … but can I transfer all my purchased presets over?
Yep!
My current processor does not support AVX2 instructions, so I cannot upgrade PS. I also use Lightroom Classic and Bridge, where I cannot figure out how to couple them together unless all of them are of the same vintage. Did I miss something when I think that because PS won’t upgrade, I will have to totally stop upgrading Bridge, Lightroom and Photoshop?
I am in the dark ages having and using owned versions of Lightroom 5 and Topaz Denoise AI v3.7.2. I am contemplating moving to Topaz Photo Ai. Should I do this, I need to go to a new Lightroom, Classic or otherwise. I typically shoot nature in JPEG, not RAW.
Any recommendations? Thx.
Hi Barry. Tough to answer. I use the latest version of LR and Topaz Photo AI and it works great for me, so that’s all I can recommend. Thanks!
Hi Matt can you point me to a beginners tutorial on Lightroom as I would like to move away from LR Classic. I haven’t touched my camera for 12 months and feel I need to start from scratch and would like to do that in the new Lightroom. LOVE TOUR VIDEOS. Hi from Sydney Aus. 😊
My Evolving course (linked above) should help. It’s a very simple program so don’t think it’s harder than it is. You’ll have it mastered in 15 minutes which is the beauty of it to me. Thanks.
Thanks Matt! I like that you stand on your decision to use LR. I just wish Adobe would use better names so we don’t have to keep saying “not Classic”. 🙂
I am curious why you didn’t use one of the object selection tools to grab the moon, is it your habit since you are “old school” or is there another reason?
Great quick little session – preshadit!
Hi Jim. Well, when they finally get rid of Classic we won’t have to worry 😉 (Joking!!!)
I don’t think anyone actually liked the naming move they did years ago, but they did it and it’s going to stick at this point. When I’m talking with friends in the industry I don’t say “not classic” because we know. But with my audience, everyone is so used to just saying “Lightroom” when they mean classic that I feel I have to point it out or I’ll get 1000 questions.
Lastly, Object Selection may have worked but it would probably have given a perfect selection to the outside edge of the moon. I deliberately didn’t want that part because it’s too fine of an edge/line at that very outer edge. Thanks! 🙂
Matt, Is Lightroom and Lightroom Web which I use on my iPad the same?
Thank you,
Tom
Hi Tom. No. Lightroom is the app on your iPad, phone or Computer. Lightroom web is what you go to through a web browser. Same photos are shared among all of them… same ecosystem… just web is a different way to access Lightroom and your photos and will not have the same updates when you see some one using computer or iPad app.
Many LR instructors over the years (and you too, Matt) have encouraged the use of collections. So I used them a lot and rely on them. If I can’t keep my already designated collections, I can’t see moving from LrC to LR.
It all depends on your workflow and needs. My collections are safe and sound in LRC, and if I ever need to go back to old photos I can get there. For me, all of my good stuff is already saved as a JPG to my “Portfolio” folder which I’ve often talked about. So I have very little need to open LRC and go back to old stuff. And new stuff is in Albums in LR, so pretty close to the same thing. Thanks!
When do you think Adobe will add a print module to LR? Thus is the main reason I have not switched to LR.
Hi Peter. Selfishly I hope never. I don’t want Adobe to rebuild LRC and all of the complexity that it has. Printing is unfortunately getting done less and less… and personal printing with your own printer has undergone a HUGE decline. So to add a feature to a program that is quite literally going away, seems odd to me. But… I wouldn’t doubt if they do add something. When? Who knows and obviously even if I did know for sure and when, I’d be under NDA and could never say 🙂 So let’s just say that I honestly have no idea, but if I had to bet on it, it would come someday.
PS: I stopped using LRC to print at least 5 years ago if not longer. I’ve often said using Epson Print Layout or Canon Print Studio is a better and less-error-prone printing experience. Thanks!
Those printing programs are OK if you own a supported printer. The Epson one, at least, is limited.
It prints, and without me having to choose a bunch of color profile settings, which is all I need it to do 🙂
I’m new to all of this. Are you saying Lightroom Classic is in the cloud, but Lightroom is on your hard drive?
Hi Deb. Maybe check out the video at the top of this page: https://mattk.com/evolving-with-lightroom
It shows it much easier than I can write it. Thanks.
