If you’re an ON1 user, today was a big day. They just announced the new features coming in the latest ON1 Photo 2019 update coming in November. If you’ve been an ON1 user for any amount of time you’ll know they release a new version in the last quarter of each year, and this year is no different. So what are the new features? Let’s take a quick look:
(Click here to go to ON1’s site to purchase or download a trial)
A New Workflow for Layers – ON1 Layers will no longer be a separate module. Instead, layers will be accessible within the nonÂdestructive workflow inside of Develop and Effects. This will allow for creating or editing multiÂlayered files, including raw files, and keep the nonÂdestructive settings for each photo layer.
New Lightroom Photo Settings Migration – There’s a new AI powered algorithm that will let you transfer Lightroom edited photos, keep the nonÂdestructive settings, and move them into ON1 Photo RAW. The updated Lightroom Migration Tool in version 2019 will transfer almost every edit you can make in Lightroom including raw processing, crop, retouching and local adjustments along with folders, photos, albums, and metadata.
New Focus Stacking – Automatically blend a series of photos at different focus distances to increase depth of Âfield.
New Auto Align Layers – Easily combine multiple photos as layers, then automatically align them based on image content so you can blend them together more easily.
New AI Masking Tool (coming in December) – This new tool will allow you to identify areas of your photo to create a selection or mask and the AI technology detects your subject matter and automatically creates a mask.
Portrait Is Back! – The new Portrait module (well, kinda new in that it was gone but now it’s back) will automatically detect faces in your photo allowing you to easily retouch, smooth skin, brighten and sharpen eyes, and whiten teeth.
New Text Tool – The new text tool let’s you control font size, color, position, and then save a preset to add the same text overlay to a batch of photos quickly.
New Master Keyword List – Now you can see every keyword you use in a single, searchable list. You can quickly apply, clear, edit, or delete keywords.
Improved Local Adjustments – Local adjustments will be updated to use the raw processing data. This allows for more highlight and shadow details with more tonal range.
New Layered HDR Workflow – With the powerful new nonÂdestructive live layers you can combine other photos, text or alternate exposures with your HDR photos.
New Filter Options in Effects – There are now a dedicated film grain, curves, and color adjustment filters in Effects. .
New User Interface – The user interface will have a fresh and modern feel. Overall contrast has been reduced to make photos stand out along with a new font to help increase readability. Updated, icons, tabs, and sliders will also take up less visual space.
New Cameras and Lenses – And of course the usual new support for the latest cameras and lenses.

Whelp! There you have it. I’m also working on a new Landscape Photo Editing course for ON1 2019, so stay tuned for that. Have a good one!
Matt,
Will you be using ON1 2019 more with this new release? It appears this new release is a Lightroom replacement. What are your thoughts?
Hi Mike. For me… no. I’m not actually looking for a replacement as I’m happy where I’m at. I’ve been using LR and PS for so long, that anything else feels foreign to me. But yes, they’ve really taken it up a BIG step with this latest version and adding layers to Develop. That’s going to be huge for ON1 users.
Matt,
Will you be updating your On1 Photo System course for the new version? And, if so, what will the cost be for those of us who purchased the original?
Thanks!
Eddie
In my humble expereince, Photo Raw 2018 had a shakey start, but has now blossomed into a very capable and stable photo processor. Yes, I don’t use catelogues, but that is because I don’t need to use catelogues. When I have tried out catelogues, they seem to work OK, but I personally don’t see the point of them.
Last night I watched a demonstration from a creative professional, who was happily showing us how he had created a photograph, by combining a handful of other photos in Photo Shop. It was all very clever stuff. But, I could not help comparing what he was doing with what I would need to do, to do the same thing in Photo Raw 2018. It seemed to me, that where I could achieve the same by applying a single Filter, he was having to apply at least three Layers. It all seemed to be so over complicated.
Also, as we compete in the same Camera Club, I know that the judges can’t tell the difference between a photo produced in Lightroom, or Photoshop, or Photo Raw.
Am I looking forward to Photo Raw 2019? Yes I am.
PS. I hope Matt, that the weather in Florida is not affecting you. Hopefully, the BBC is over egging the pudding again, with their reports of near apocalyptic devastation.
Best wishes, David Price.
Matt if I’m out of order here for venting, delete and/or don’t post.
I’m in “breathless anticipation” that ON1 will, in addition to the new 2019 features, offers solutions to major core problems. I’ve been posting Version 2018 problems since December 2017, with log files, with ON1 logged into my MAC, posting to the “MAC User Technical Forum(s) and lengthy e-mail threads with technical support that finally agrees there is an issue and a ticket is created for the Developers BUT……… then every thing goes silent, no updates, no solutions, nothing. The new MAC User Forum is well populated with others that have the same problems and unlikely to be resolved for Version 2019.
Net, Net. I don’t use Cataloged Folder or Albums or Layers or Perfect Eraser et al. BUT I have 3,000+ edited images, some for paying clients, and I’m stuck with a Fancy Browser and UI but not much else.
Catalog in Version 2018.5.3 never finishes even a single folder with 37 images and pegs all 12 of my processors at 100% for hours, reports that it is finally 100% done and then starts up again or hangs the program. Version 2017 didn’t have the problem.. As an unpaid (PreBeta at best) Tester for 2018 I just can’t rationalize paying more $’s for an apple with a rotten core that then gets polished with new features.
Is 2019 the first year for a perpetual license for On1 Plus members? I’ve been an On1 Plus member from the beginning but don’t remember if we got a perpetual license.
Hi Mary. ON1 has always been perpetual. Your Plus membership is a recurring membership, but you do own the software and get the new version each year as long as you keep your PLUS membership. If you don’t renew PLUS, then you keep your latest version.
Thanks, Matt!
