There’s a hidden setting in Photoshop that can dramatically improve your selections. When we use the Select Subject tool, the selection has never been great and still leaves us with a lot of masking work. But when you see the difference in quality after changing one small setting, you’ll be amazed at how good your selection edges are. Enjoy!

Fantastic tip Matt. Thank you for your precise but simple teaching methods. I learn so much from you!
What an excellent feature. Thanks for the reveal Matt!
I’ve been using the cloud selection option as default for a while and agree it’s a better option for me. Only issue with either way is that PS seems not to like ears and shoe tips?
Is image processing on a certain version on Mac for PS? On a friend computer and she can’t find it in preferences
Hi. If they’re updated to the latest version of PS 2023 it will be there.
Thanks, Matt! Great find, love your stuff!
Thank you very much, we can easy miss these hidden things
Hi,
A maybe stupid question: are these technics working also for photos digitised from diapositives ?
They may. Give it a try and let us know!
That extension of Object Selection is very exciting…will use!
Thank you! Great info!
Very helpful tip
Help, please. I use a PC with Photoshop. I cannot find “Image Processing” under Edit> Preferences. I also see no arrow drop down choices when I use “select subject”. I’m using 22.5.9 release (Version 24.1) I love the idea of what you presented, just can’t find it. Thanks.
Hi. Maybe look at this page at your version and you’ll see it’s a couple of years old.

I don’t store any photos in Adobe’s cloud but I wonder, if you use this selection, will they then use your photo for AI development without consent?
Hi. They will most likely use your photo for training the AI and a company like Adobe would never do it without your consent. I’m positive you agreed to a terms of service (just like you do, without even thinking about it, for this website and every other website and social media platform on the web).
Thank you Matt
As always, informative and detailed
Unfortunately, I’ve have an image of a very cute little spider that Ive never been able to select properly
Must admit, this a tough one
Now, my lat 2012 iMac will not update any more, so may help when I upgrade this month
Mac Studio Ultra, budget wont tolerate the cheese grater 🙂
all maxed out except only 48 GB GPU

Wow
Interesting tip, thanks a lot!
Hi Matt,
Great discovery! Is there something hidden like that in Lightroom?
Nope.
Wonder if using cloud allows Adobe to keep your image for their internal work.
Thx. Another great tip!
Thanks Matt, good advice as usual

Terrific!! thanks so much Matt!
GREAT tip!!!!
Thank you, Matt, this is a killer PS tip.
I actually use the cloud version for selections, but I didn’t know that I could make it the default.
We all benefit from your knowledge.
Does LR Classic allow select subject in cloud? If so, how? If not, is it likely to come soon?
I’m also interested to know this.
It does not.
You mentioned this in the Texture Blending course. Thanks for the tip re setting it in preferences. I love your courses and your tips. Thank you.
Great idea.
thanks
I use LR only.
Wow. Great tip. Thank you so much Matt. Always look forward to your little tips. Also Happy New Year to you!
Matt,
If you choose select subject from camera raw mask, does it use the cloud or the device? Does it depend on your setting in preferences? I stopped using select subject in select and have only been using the mask in camera raw. Thanks
Hi. This option only works in Photoshop the way I showed it here. It is not available anywhere else.
Great tip, set it up immediate and Works great.
What do you think of this compared to using the lasso tool, click on select and mask and there is an option to “Refine Hair”?
Hi. All different ways to do the same thing and none are right or wrong. Give ’em both a try and see what the results are.
Nice tip! Thanks Matt.
THanks again!!
You keep coming through
Wow! Thanks for that.
Thanks for this important tidbit!
Using the Cloud option, you lost a lot of hair detail on the right ear.
Simple and sweet. Great tip!
Genius! So good to know, thanks for sharing Matt. Heading to ‘preferences’ right now!!!
Awesome! Thank you so much Matt.
Thanks, Matt. I got curious last week and tried the cloud option vs the device option. I also found the cloud option to generally be better and not much, if any, slower. There’s another option in the preferences menu for “selections processing” to be set as “faster” or “more stable.” What’s your opinion on that option?
Thank Matt. Good to know. Always appreciate the helpful hints and the fact that you get right to the point with useful information.
This is an amazing tip! I love your videos and your classes….hope you have a great year and keep these tips coming our way!
Matt,
If I set the default to Cloud, what happens if I am sitting somewhere in the middle of Africa in a tent?
Paul
My guess would be nothing, but give it a try and let us know. Or turn off your internet and see what happens 🙂
