Let’s take a look at what the difference between Lightroom (and Camera Raw) Presets and Profiles are. They each have their place for your photography workflow. While, on the surface, it can seem like they do the same things, they actually work very different – and we can use them in different ways.
Presets vs. Profiles (Which one should you use?)

Thank you, Matt. Very helpful distinction: preset for starting, profile for finishing. Easy to remember. By the way: I love your sun flare presets!
Fantastic video! Presets to start, and Profiles (which I now think of as “Postsets”) to finish. And the icing on the cake is that Profiles don’t mess with sliders. Brilliant!!
Thanks, Matt. Last year, when I saw the amazingly wonderful and tasteful B&W profiles LR introduced, it was almost enough for me to go back to LR from ON1, even though LR’s “catalog” system drives me crazy. ON1 is quite proactive in enhancing their software, so I’m hoping a great set of B&W profiles, along with a realm of artistic type profiles with sliders, is under development. I am enjoying ON1.
Also, I like your suggestion about using profiles as a finishing touch. Of course, applying finishing touch profiles in subtleties is limited to LR now…though in ON1, perhaps a LUTs could produce a similar effect, adjusting the opacity to suit.
Thank Matt , have been using Lightroom a short time, got a lot to learn. Great information and thanks again!
Good stuff, as always, Matt. Thank you again….
Thanks Matt I have to agree with Sherry L above, I never knew either.
Great clarifications. Precisely what I was wondering about.
Thanks Matt, very helpful info. I have only just started using Lightroom vs ON1 (though I still use ON1 as a plug-in). I used to use Camera Profiles only in PS and PSE. Great to know I now have more choices!
Thanks Matt! Didn’t realize that profiles don’t mess with the sliders. So thanks for pointing that out.
