This video is just as much of a public service announcement as it is a quick tutorial. I often hear from people who say their photos open in the wrong application. This quick video will help you fix that.
Solved! My Photo Opens in the Wrong App

Thanks for the quick info. It works. saved me a lot of frustration that the software vendors change the default without our permission.
Thank you, Topaz Labs is gone now and PS is back.
Hi Matt. Nice concise and clear explanation, thanks. The bummer is often however that more than one file association will change when installing another application (like Affinity Photo after Adobe Photoshop). So next to me changing back the *.jpg connection to Photoshop, I also need to do *.jpeg, *.tiff, *.tif, *.heic, *.nef, *.arw, *.crw, *.raf, etc (the list can go on)… I suppose there’s no quick way to do this? Or a way to undo the hiking of file associations by the installation of the next application?
Wow, it really works. For some reason PS was the default on my Mac. I was able to change it with your video help above. It was easy. Thanks so much. What a time saver.
Matt, your tips and tutorials are always life savers.
My issue is this ,I use Lightroom all the time,I then purchased On1. All of a sudden a whole section of my photos were changed to an On1 extension. I couldn’t change them back and they no longer would open using my Lightroom or photoshop.
I now have a new computer and would like to install On1 again but am afraid this will happen again. Do you know of or have a solution for me?
Thank You .
Hi Darlene – you have chosen a setting in your ON1 Preferences to save edits in .ON1 files. It’s not hurting anything and if you use ON1 you should use this setting.
You can change this in your Prefs or you can do some research on the ON1 site to find out more. They have a really good online manual that you can probably google search up. Good luck!
Like others, have been annoyed recently to see files opening with the Topaz studio logo in front of their file name. Have tried several times to contact Topaz and they never respond to me. Only solution is to delete Topaz programs . Very annoying. Am about to try your method.
Hi Matt
This is true. But please note that for some people who use programs like Topaz, what it does, is to embed their logo onto the file. Hence, when you get the info you will find in some cases their logo affixed onto their file. The file may still open in Photoshop but the logo on the RAW file will show the Topaz logo. This is another issue.
Perhaps try a Google search or contact Topaz on how to change it?
Thank you Matt
every little bit always helps

Problem appeared for the first time just last night. Your timing was fortuitous and very much appreciated. You certainly saved me a lot of anguish trying to get to the bottom of this. I do wonder why it’s suddenly happened. Thank you Matt
Matt, You are a lifesaver for me. I’ve been frustrated for some time because Topaz studio took over and whenever I clicked on an image ,it opened there. I was at the point of uninstalling it because my RAW files always opened there.
THANK YOU, THANK YOU!
I only have one thing to say… “I LOVE YOU, MAN!!!! This has been a problem for me, now I know what to do!!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Hi Matt
Thank you so much for this tip. It’s been a pain in the a**e for so long. So simple but so effective, Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!
My Lightroom Classic does not show up in the list when I click on “Open With” but Adobe Photoshop does. Is there any way to add Lightroom? Thanks
Hi. You should be able to choose it from “other”. That said, there’s no reason because you really don’t “open” photos with LR Classic. You import them so I wouldn’t advise changing this setting to LR.
Finally!
Thank you, canon raw automatically went to topaz denoise unless I dragged it to photoshop-no more!
Thanks Matt!! The most useful 3 minute video I have watched in a LONG while. I was having problems with my ON1 presets opening in ON1 Portrait AI rather than ON1Photo Raw 2021.
BTW: The rest of your video tutorials are excellent too.
Thanks Matt.
I noticed when I set the Default to Photoshop 2021, it opens in Camera Raw, and if I set the Default to Lightroom, it opens in the Lightroom Import Window?
Hi Rich. That is correct and the way it should happen.
Matt, this could not have been more timely. My native Nikon files were opening in Topaz and I just hadn’t taken the time to figure out how to make the change. All your short tips are always so practical and helpful! Thank you.
Amazing. I actually knew how to do this. Pretty good for an 82-year-old lady.
Now I wish I could figure out how to double click a folder and not have the currently open one close. There used to be a command key in the dark ages, but I can’t figure it out now. I called Apple and they couldn’t help me.
To Susie:
Not sure about Apple, but in Windows, there’s a command that askes if you want to open in a new window, or just one. That might be what you need?
it sure is what I need. There used to be one in Mac, but no more it seems.
Susie, you might want to try this: right-click on the folder you want to open and when the context menu appears, choose “open in new tab.”
Thank you !!!
Thanks Matt. I was dimly aware of what you showed here but it probably would have involved some hunting on my part to get it.
