While I was in Iceland last month, I had the chance to try out some of the Sony in-camera apps that I’ve really grown to be a fan of lately. The one I was really surprised about was called Smooth Reflection. All I can say is WOW! I can’t say that I’m throwing away all of my ND filters, because there definitely still is a need for them. But I will say that this app will most definitely have me using them less, considering some of the results I got.
Here’s a quick Before/After view of one of the photos I took with the Smooth Reflection app. Keep in mind, this was all done in-camera, no filters, and the resulting photo I got back to edit from the A7R ii was a raw file. Pretty cool stuff!
Anyway, I did an entire article on it over on Sony’s Alpha Universe website if you want to read the full story. Here’s the link. And here’s a link to the $4.99 app in the Sony PlayMemories store in case you’re interested.
I’m confused. I tried the app today; single frame shooting, raw capture. Smooth Reflection set for shooting lake or pond. When I shot the scene the camera took innumerable images. The only way I could stop it was to turn off the camera. Is the process meant to take multiple images and if so, how many? Also, on the final image it said Fine not raw. What am I doing wrong?
Matt,
I love this app too been using it since day 1 using the custom option to set the number of shots allows me to get water just how i want it smooth but with texture so these days I rarely reach for the ND.
With the Sony Apps you always have to read the small print and check they put out a RAW file most do.
