Merry Christmas Matt! Thanks, as ever, for your clear and concise presentation. I always learn from your videos and the various learning tools I have purchased over the years. All the best for 2023!
Hi Matt
Thanks for all good tips and courses!
As I do not have enough space on my MAC I have both photos and LR catalogue on a external disc ( LaCie Rugged) .
Would it be faster if I moved the catalogue to the harddisc. Must keep the photos on the external disc still as I am now using almost 4 TB.
Would be great to get your opinion.
Kind ragards
Chris
Thank you for this video! Can you advise on the best way to find all my local adjustments and spot removals so I can clear the history on the images with the most edits?
Hi. There is no trick other than choosing the tool and looking for them. Thanks.
Matt,
Your videos are always relevant & on point. Thank you!
I like your hoodie, where can I get one?
Thank You
Hi. Thanks. I got it at a Sony event a while back. Haven’t seen them sold anywhere.
Excellent video. Long enough to be useful, short enough to be able to keep concentration.
Thanks, Matt — yet another great tutorial. I always, always, always learn something new from you.
I really love your tutorials Matt. I always think “I know about that” but then when I watch you………!!!! I always find new things – lovely thank you.
Thanks for the great tips!
You are a really good teacher. Thanks.
As usual you have created another great training video, I appreciate the information. I use a windows computer and would like to ask you a couple of things
1. I have a computer with 128GB of ram and 10 TB of SSD drive, can I go over the 20.0 GB for the Raw Photo processing?
2. I shoot with both JPG and RAW files that I upload to lightroom, the library displays only 1 of the 2 files, so when I edit the photos in the Develop module, is it working with the JPG or the RAW files? I assume that it works with the JPG since Adobe has a different program ACR for the raw editing. Am I thinking of this wrong?
3. You also indicated that we should keep the computer device drivers up to date, that older drivers might cause problems. As I indicated I use a windows system and I found out a year ago, from Unmesh Dinda (he has a youtube channel for lightroom and photoshop) about a program called Driver Easy that can be run periodically on windows PCs and will make sure all drivers on windows PCs are updated automatically. Thought this is something you might want to pass on to your viewers, to make sure that windows drivers do not create problems
Hi Art.
1) Give it a try and see how it works. There is no rule or guide for this.
2) It would be a lot to explain here. If you have my LR System course, it talks about JPG/Raw. If not, just do a quick Google search for something like “How does Lightroom handle JPG and Raw” and you’ll see how it works. In short, LR is just showing/editing the raw file. It doesn’t have anything to do with ACR.
3) Good to know. Thanks for sharing! 🙂
Great program
Thanks for the helpful videos you do Matt. I have a question about the XMP file. I use primarily Lightroom, some Photoshop and Topaz. From your comment about XMP files, it sounds like I don’t need to have this feature turned on. Is that correct?
Hi Sherry. No other program besides LR and PS will be able to use that info in XMP, so it would be pointless to create XMP files if you’re not opening them up in an Adobe app. Thanks.
Thank you Matt, I learn a lot from you.
I’ve had .XMP files created as a backup if my catalog became corrupted the .XMP files would provide a way to get at the edits I had performed. Is this a valid concern given the additional time required to create the .XMP files?
I guess I’m wondering if my concern is valid on use of ,XMP files?
Hi. I would just say make a consistent backup of your catalog and your computer every day. That way, you won’t worry if your catalog became corrupt. At the end of the day it doesn’t really matter much. If you have XMP turned on and you’re happy with the performance, then go for it. It won’t hurt anything other than speed. Thanks.
Have you had others ask about the slowness of OPENING Lr?
Downloading,etc seem to fine.
Thanks
Hi. I have not.
Thanks Matt. Keep up the good work. I learn something new every time I listen to you.
Great tips Matt, I had most of your suggestions done already.
Thanks Again.
Semper Fi,
Joe W.
Thanks for the subtitles (closed caption.) Huge improvement to your presentation.
Another excellent tutorial

Hi Matt,
Just by optimising I’ve made Lightroom load faster.
Thanks for a great video.
If you turn off “automatically write changes to XMP”, how does that affect the file when you hand it off to Photoshop from the develop module?
Hi. The xmp doesn’t have anything to do with going in to PS as long as you go through the “Photo > Edit in” memu
Import with sidecar file but turn off save xmp file. Are these consistent recommendations?
Hi. Not sure what you’re asking
Matt, you talked about video drivers and keeping them up to date. All good but NVIDIA ordinarily downloads the standard -gaming- driver. When I was having glacial speed problems with Topaz Sharpen AI, Topaz labs suggested downloading the -Studio- version of NVIDIA’s drivers. When I looked at the Studio driver page it advertise that those drivers were from graphic artists but didn’t mention photo editing. When I loaded the Studio drivers, the change is speed was amazing. No doubt, AMD has similar drivers for other-than-gamers but some research would be needed to determine what’s best for photo editing.
This was also news for me! And a GREAT help. While my graphics card is getting long in the tooth (1000 series NVIDIA) I never knew there was a STUDIO version since they only push the GAMING version updates… LOL
Thanks again, Matt. Very helpful, as ever.
Great info as always! Thanks. Gonna check for graphics card updates now!
One thing that made a big difference for me was closing the Metadata panel (in the Library module).
When I had the Metadata panel open and set to “EXIF and IPTC”, operations on multiple images seemed noticeably less responsive, as did scrolling through the filmstrip. For example, with the Metadata panel open, if I select 16 images and click “Rotate Right” I actually get a progress bar labeled Rotate Right and you can see it takes a second or two.
I now have the Metadata selection set to “Default” and leave the panel closed (i.e. not expanded) unless I specifically need to look at the metadata.
This isn’t as big of an issue as it used to be; I don’t know if it’s because LR made some changes or because I upgraded to SSD and WB Black drives. Or both. YMMV
Thank you Matt, for sharing this very helpful information. You do a great job of showing and explaining what to do and how to do it!!!
Always Good Information to help move to the next Leve !

Thanks Matt – you ALWAYS offer great tips and reminders that help improve my workflow!
Hi, Matt. I am really learning a lot from your videos.
Please put me on your email list!
Great video on dealing with sluggishness in Lightroom. Another one that I have found is if you keep your catalog in Dropbox (or similar sync service), turn off syncing while running LR, I have found it helps quite a bit. I also turn-off file protection on Avast on my Mac while editing, which also seems to help. Also, like you I have found that the great new masking features in LR do put a much great demand on my computer; and for someone who does most of my toning in local adjustments and few global toning adjustments, it can be a struggle for computer.
As always Matt,I learned something new and have made a couple of changes to speed thing up. Thanks for the sage advice.
Hi Matt-Where did you get your sweatshirt? It looks cool…
Hi Charlie – I got it as a gift, at a Sony event I was at recently. Don’t know of anywhere that sells them.
Great video! Where did you get that hoodie?

These are some great tips, definitely going to have a look at my settings.
Thank you Matt.
Thanks Matt. LR runs fine once I get it going but startup can take a full minute. This is solved if I create a new preference file. LR then starts very quickly. Once I customize preferences I am back to same slow start up. Weird!
