It’s easy for us to get caught up thinking the masking tools in Lightroom and Photoshop are very technical. And in some cases they are. But when you can look at their uses more creativity and really learn what makes them tick, you can improve how they work for you. In this week’s tutorial we’ll do just that – to get you thinking about a simple technical setting, in a much more useful and deeper way.

Great. But HELP…. how do you SAVE the mask in Camera Raw and then move to photoshop or save as a preset mask and move to other photoshop tools. When I OPEN object or press DONE in raw, nothing happens and I’m back to the “saved” original image.
Hi. You cannot save the mask and use it in Photoshop.
Thank you Matt. You are always very informative.
Thanks Matt
Live your thinking outside the box.
Super, thank you Matt.
I love your tutorials. Always to the point and clear with great practical advice. Thanks, Matt
Another excellent tutorial
This is the video I needed! I have spent so much time perfecting the mask on bird wings. Thank you for helping me think differently!
Love your workflow
Matt,
Met you at one of the Kelby events. I live down the road from you in Palm Harbor.
Keep up the great work, thank you! Put me on the list for announcements when you decide to do a live event.
WOW! What a great tutorial. This is a game changer. Thanks Matt.
I Watched this video twice and tried out the subtract methods on about ten of my bird images and I works like a charm. Thanks. I do have an account with Matt K.
Nice concise post. I think the subtract color will be of great use as well as the soft edge. Lr is really becoming a stand alone ap.
I find all your tutorials extremely helpful. Thank you so much Matt.
Thank you for expanding my thoughts on how to use the editing! in PS ,and LRC.
“Don’t get fixated on just subtracting with a brush…”. Lol. You just described me to a T! I’m that guy who spends fifteen minutes at 300% removing the over-mask between feathers. I get stuck in a rut on things and don’t get outside of my little bubble of what I know and am comfortable with. This is a game-changer for me, Matt! Always improving thanks to you, Matt!
I’ve used the first subtract method with the brush, but not the other two you demonstrate in nature related subjects. Subtract is a lot more versatile than I’d first thought. Lots of other subtract options to try, as the video continues on to to suggest. Very creative use of LR! Thank you.
Interesting I will be using this subtract tool more often Thanks for the lesson
Thank you Matt for sharing this great tutorial. Your videos are concise and easily understandable. I very much appreciate all you do to help me work smarter in Lightroom and Photoshop and this one is a game changer for sure.
Hi Matt
what a brilliant video I was struggling with a models hair but after watching the video
it cleared a few things up I will definitely try them later I have always been a bit weary
of using masks
Thank You
Thank you Matt. Sometimes we need to stop and think things through before discovering the best tool to accomplish the result we want. I think this video shows that too! Appreciate it 🙂
Very clear and succint explanation. Thanks Matt
Thanks Matt particularly for the subtract linear gradient idea
Thank you Matt, Scary but I actually knew a couple of the fixes before you showed them. Still learned some new stuff. Your teaching is always appreciated.
Wow! Matt, very timely video
Since 2019 had some health issues, had late 2012 iMac (maxed out), health issues on the mend, nothing compatible any more
Updated to Apple studio ultra and studio monitor , playing catch-up with my editing (for wildlife and landscape)
Thank you for your very helpful video,
Even got the very old Wacom Intuos pro Med to work ……….. eventually! 🙂

Game-changing information. Thank you.
Excellent information. Thanks
If I’ve said it once I’ve said it many times, your tutorials are amazingly good and easy to follow. Superb instructor ability.
Great lesson
As always, your videos teach much needed skills. I appreciate that you consistently provide ideas- AND THEN DEMONSTRATE THE USE OF TOOLS- showing exactly what to do, and what to expect. You are an excellent teacher!!
Subtract by color range– why have I not been using it!? Thanks Matt!
It doesn’t have to be perfect! Great advise!
