There are so many features in Lightroom and Photoshop that it’s hard to uncover and/or remember them all. Recently, some one asked me what a Target Collection was and I realized it’s a tiny feature that I use a lot, but don’t really talk about. Enjoy!
Dear Matt,
I’m using catalogs for as long as I can remender, but , as you said, this is one of those little items that can make your life a lot easier with I didn’t know.
I’ve been directly using it af I saw your tip.
Thanks for the reminder that I need to start using collections Matt.
I believe this is called “Quick Collection” now. I’m so pleased with your videos. All of them are excellent.
Thanks for the great input. There is one thing worth to consider: If the photo is already in the target collection and you hit „b“ again, the photo will be removed from the collection. So it works like a toggle
Clear explanation as always. Thanks Matt!
I use this when building a collection in readiness for creating a photo book. It should also be noted that typing ‘B’ on a photo already in the target collection will remove it from that collection.
Nice to know about that Target Collection, and because you can’t have more than one I now use that collection as my ‘Best photos’ collection.
When I want to show my best photos to family, friends or others I only have to show that collection. Even when it grows I only need this collection to show because is will be up to date.
great video. I didn’t know this. So simple but very powerful in saving time and effort
I always wondered what collections were. Thanks Matt
Another great tip
Hi Matt, a trap with using the shortcut “B” is should you use the shortcut again on the same photo (typically you forget you have added the photo to the target collection), the photo is actually removed from the target collection – there is a short message advising you of this action but … the message is easily missed. I stopped using this shortcut years ago because of this implementation and now prefer to drag a photo into a collection and, even if you drag the same photo into the collection it is not removed from the collection.
Thank you, Matt!
Wonderful tip Matt, I haven’t used it be but going try it ! thanks always Matt
Thanks, Matt. One other thing about Target collections is that if you press “B” a second time on the SAME photo (or on any photo in the target collection) it will remove that photo from the target collection. It will show you a message that it has removed it.
I use Collections constantly – this will be a big time saver. Thank you!
The way I remember that keyboard shortcut is “B” for “B-cause I said so” (or “because I want it in a collection”)
Good tip!
Great tip! I have another question. For years, under all photos all the different years came up that my photos were taken so I could just go to whatever year I wanted to. All of a sudden this disappeared. Do you know how I can get this back?
Thanks for the tip! I recognized Crimp Ear in your bear collection. Looks like you have some good shots from your time at SSCL.
I use target collections all the time to create a collection with photo options to enter into a competition. Makes it easier to decide which I want to select to enter.
Great tip! Thanks!
Matt-As usual good tip. I am going to try it out.
Thanks
Matt,
I have been using this for years to choose individual images for processing, especially when I have photographed events, like my church vacation bible school, with portraits of individual students, family groups, teachers, and class activities.
It’s a great idea to make people aware of this useful feature.
I bought your Lightroom System course since you first made it available. I really appreciate your periodic updates and often go back to it for reference.
I have been using LR since it was introduced and never bothered to see what target collection was all about. It will help a lot with my current review of photos to identify old photos that have hidden potential as monochrome. Thanks!!!
