Each year at Adobe Max (this week), they introduce a new version of Photoshop with brand new updates. This week was no different. We’re now at Photoshop 2020, and Adobe released some new features like the Object Selection tool, better Select Subject, and lot’s of other little improvements. While I don’t cover all of the updates (some are for designers), check out the video below for a recap of what’s new for photographers.
What’s New in Photoshop 2020 (for photographers)

Hi Matt – Always appreciate your excellent show and tell videos when updates to (Photoshop or Lightroom) come along. I think because you are an educator you cut to the chase and give your audience a simplistic review of the new features. You don’t bury us with unecessary facts. Always appreicate you excellent teaching methods Matt.
?? Matt. Good as always
Thanks Matt, I enjoyed watching this summary of the new features in PS (and also the new LR summary), Now I have some homework to do to see if I can take advantage of this information. I am glad I watched.
Thank you, Matt. I would never have realized these subtleties. I noticed that when Creative Cloud upgraded, it left PS and LR 2019 still installed. Is there an incompatibility that would make one want to keep the older versions?
On another note, does 2020 warrant an upgrade to CLiR?
Thank you again.
Check out the most recent post here on the blog 🙂
Hi Harold – no need to keep old versions. And I don’t use CLIR so I can’t really speak to it. Thanks!
Thank you, Matt. I always find your videos informative, helpful and clear.
Thanks Matt. I always hate the change but embrace it in the end. I really like that the delete select subject button is more precise. This will speed up workflow. As always, thanks for your lessons!
I had to go find the new select tool. Thanks for showing me how.
Hi Matt. I am about to update Photoshop on my Mac. For some time now I have had two versions of PS installed PS CC 2019 and PS CC 2018. Adobe now offers me Photoshop and Photoshop v. 20.0.7. When I go to update, I am asked if I want to remove old versions. I would greatly appreciate your advice on this before I proceed. Thanks so much for your valuable comments on the update features of LR and PS. I have already update LR to latest version.
Incredible how the “small” news are the best ones, like the “close others” and the zoom with de opt key. thanks a lot for sharing!
I know right! Two features I already couldn’t give back and use all the time.
Did you cover all the features in this video? I don’t think so. I have got more new features in another video created by someone else. Anyway, thank you so much to show something at least. Hope you will make another video including other 2020 features.
Hi. Not sure if you listed to the intro but I said I was only covering features (that I thought were) for photographers and I pointed you to another youtube channel if you wanted to learn more about other features.
Did the update and restore on tool bar but still can’t get the Object Selection tool. When I check the system info it shows:
Adobe Photoshop Version: 20.0.7 20191017.r.87 2019/010/17: 1208010 x64
I think the latest version is 21.0.0 however I had PS pinned to my task bar in Windows 10. When I use the task bar to open PS, it opened version 19. Create Cloud indicated version 21 was installed so I opened it from there. I had to remove the existing PS from my task bar and pin the new version there. That was weird as the latest version of LR Classic opens with the existing task bar icon.
Thanks, that resolved the issue
hi,
I followed Matts instructions but still couldnt find the Object Selection tool….I searched Adobe and found the following instructions which did work for me…
“The easiest way to find a tool that seems to be missing is to press and hold the disclosure triangle on the 3 dots at the bottom of the Tools panel and choose Edit Toolbar. Now look down the left hand side for the tool to see if it’s in your workspace. If it is, you’ll see what it’s been grouped with.
If you don’t find it there, look on the right hand side for tools that have been “hidden” but are accessible from the 3 dot (“more”) menu. You can always drag it back from there into the toolbar proper.”
The tool was hidden for me and I dragged it across and is visible now as expected
thanks,Nigel
Thanks Matt. As usual great presentation – object selection and tilde key were great features.
Good stuff!!
Thanks Matt. this has renewed my interest in editing with P.S. again
Thank you Matt!
I’ve never modified my toolbar and had the same problem. Would not have fount Object Select without the fix you provided, so thanks! Clearly a bug.
Thanks Matt
I never would have found the object select option if you hadn’t found the fix.
Matt’s video saved me a lot of grief.
Excellent as always Matt… You are a great mentor and my training resource for years. Object selection for me is the most exciting… I am a commercial/Product photographer and selecting and compositing is a mainstay… This is going to be if not a gamechanger… a very addition to my tools. Thanks as always for a very informative and easy to understand presentation.
Matt, Thank you for your very clear explanation and demonstrations of the new Photoshop features that are the ones which will be most appealing to the photographers whose main interest is editing their images.
I also appreciate you suggesting Jesus Ramirez’s channel for a complete guide aimed at designers (and tinkerers like me). This spring I had the privilege of attending his class sessions at the Can Am Photo Expo in Buffalo, NY.
I think that using the tilde key for erase mode when masking is an excellent idea. That tilde key is probably the least used one on most keyboards so it saves some wear on the “X” key.
You’re welcome John. Jesús rocks!!
Thanks Matt. Great presentation. Beginning to use Photoshop more. Will have to listen to this again but really love the object selection info.
