There’s a lot of talk about AI these days. I think most of you DON’T want AI to generate photos for you – and you’d rather make your own with the camera you spent thousands on. But when it comes to the most common Photoshop task (Removing Distractions), Photoshop’s Generative Fill feature can be a lifesaver and produce better results than other tools.
And don’t forget I’ve got a new podcast out (Click Here)
thank you it was very informative and I learned a lot.
Very informative, thank you!
Thanks!
Matt, our photo club competitions require our submissions to include only our pixels. Due to that we have cautioned members to not use generative fill, but instead use content-aware fill. In your opinion, are we interpreting this correctly?
Hi Eddie. Most of what I teach was never recommended for contests as I try to teach a “It’s your photo, do whatever you want” style.
Next, I don’t think you could call Content Aware Fill “your pixels”. They’re still being generated and interpreted by the computer. Technically, what’s going on behind the scenes, I don’t know and I don’t think we’ll ever know as it’s proprietary technology. But Content Aware is most definitely sampling things around your photo and coming up with a solution (that wasn’t created by the photographer) to fill an area.
Anyway, not totally sure that helped you since the real answer is I don’t know for sure.
But in general, I’d say that if removing something unsightly in the photo is allowed, then allow all means of removing it. Who cares how it was done if the process is allowed? To me, rules like that are too subjective to the person’s (or group’s) feelings who create the rule. I think the better route is to have a category called “SOTC” (straight out of the camera). That way, you can appease the purists, but then also allow people to engage in modern day photography which does (and will continue) to use AI, until the thought of it isn’t even there because it’s so mainstream. Hope that helps. Thanks! 🙂
I don’t see the “Link Below” for your Real World AI for Photography.
All fixed.
Great tip and explanation…thanks!
Just amazing! I have good luck with Gen Fill or Expand or background removal for simple stuff, but one example seems to stump AI: A portrait where a picture on the wall has a frame that goes through the subject’s head. Anytime the background is complicated, AI struggles. Perhaps I should just take your new course!
I wonder if you could use a rectangular marquee to make the initial mask of the picture frame and then subtract out the subject. That may “help” AI enough to see what you want. Sorry I didn’t have anything to try it on so it’s just a guess.
THANKS
very timely and very easy to use tools

Amassing!!!!
Great!
Thanks Matt!
Thanks for another great video. How would an AI approach for removing distractions affect photos submitted for competitions. Would the AI elements be considered original work by the submitting photographer- similarly how does AI affect copyright? Thanks.
Hi. In my experience if the editing is fun in any way, it’s not allowed 😉 but You’d have to check with the comp rules, but they usually don’t like manipulation, so my guess is going to be it won’t be allowed.
Thank you! This is great!
My favorite approach is to go ahead and use the fancy stuff that is not yet 100% on a separate layer, then blend in what works and mask out stuff that doesn’t. 🙂
Bruce,
Could you explain what you meant by “fancy stuff that is not yet 100% on a separate layer?”
Thanks,

Great video as we embark on the latest version of photoshop. Thanks Matt.
Awesome as always! Love your tutorials. Thank you Matt.
Thanks Matt, love this tutorial and am very much looking forward to using these techniques. As you have described, they are much better than the content aware tool!
Every time I watch a video with you, I learn something that gives me time back in my life! Thanks for always sharing better ways to use our tools… and you cracked me up with the “it’s already computer generated!!!” I am grateful for these tools that make my job easier!!
Thanks
Great, Thank you. Simple and efficient.
