Hi all. There’s a new podcast episode that I just released. Don’t forget, there are 3 episodes so far:
Episode 1: Beware of Photography Advice
Episode 2: Deleting Photos is Good for the Soul
Episode 3: Is AI Killing Photoshop?
Also, if you haven’t seen my “What’s New in Photoshop 2024” Video which covers some of the new AI features, it’s free to watch right here.
Episode 4 Topic – Adobe (and Industry) Pricing Changes
In Episode 4, I’ve asked Brian Matiash to join me. Make sure to check out his brand new “Lightroom Everywhere” course as well.
This week, we wanted to talk about the recent pricing changes from Adobe. What it means for today and what it could mean for the future. Plus we also cover some industry pricing changes for other photo software apps.
How to Listen/Watch
You can listen to the podcast on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or Google. Or you can watch it below.
The podcast is NOT intended to be visual in any way, so all you’re doing is watching the two of us talk and nothing else. But if that’s the way you prefer it, feel free. Personally, podcasts are something I listen to when I have nothing else to do, or to keep me busy while doing something else – so I never watch them.

OTHER PODCAST PLATFORMS? – I publish this to the main podcast platforms that my podcast host offers. It should show up on all the major ones, but you may use some other podcast software. If you don’t see it, right now there’s nothing I can do. I’m technically incompetent in this area and don’t plan to spend any more time than I already do trying to figure it out ? So please listen using one of the options above.
PRO TIP: I typically listen to podcasts on my phone while driving or in the gym. And I usually set most podcasts to 1.25x – 1.5x speed to get through it faster.
Since this IS NOT A TRAINING tutorial, and it’s just us talking, I think you can speed us up and get through it faster so feel free to give it a try. I can’t help you find that setting, but again… most podcast apps have it so poke around. If you can use Lightroom and Photoshop I have no doubt you can figure out how to use a podcast app ?
Matt-
Great episode discussing the new local option of LR!
Three questions:
1. Since there is no longer a catalog, I assume it’s using sidecar files- yes?
2. Why are virtual copies not available in Lightroom and what would a workaround for this be? I often create different look for a single image that’s not simply an earlier or different “version”.
3. With all due respect for your guest’s offerings, will you be offering a LR course that teaches this new way of utilizing local accessing of files and if so, when do you expect to release it?
Thank you!
Hi Greg.
1. No… I have no idea what it uses. For me, it defeats the purpose to even wonder. I just open my photos and edit. I backup my computer every day, so if anything happens I can always restore but I have no idea where it stores things and I’m blissfully ignorant 🙂
2. The “why” would be a question for Adobe… No there is no workaround other than to sync the file to the cloud – in which case versions are available.
3. Yep. Stay tuned. It isn’t a conflict for Brian and I, as Brian is teaching a 100% cloud-based workflow with LR. My teaching will not include using LR as a cloud-based editor but rather a better hard-drive based editor than LRC.
Thanks!
Hi Matt. A very interesting discussion. Thanks very much.
Adobe has recently announced that the timeframe in which there is no generative credit limit is expanded from november 1st to january 1, 2024.
This is their statement (https://helpx.adobe.com/firefly/using/generative-credits-faq.html):
Note: For a limited time, Creative Cloud, Adobe Firefly, Adobe Express, and Adobe Stock paid subscribers won’t be subject to generative credit limits. To learn when credit limits will apply, check back here after January 1, 2024.
Just a thanks for a great and informative discussion…
I did not know that there were any price changes.
I am one of those who had not heard of the price change. Thanks guys. I’m on the Adobe monthly plan and have been for years. I tried On1 and had their suite as to not be on a “plan” but the increase of price for each upgrade made it too expensive. I’ve stuck with Adobe and glad I did.
Are the generative credits of 250 for existing $9.95 users a one time shot and no further credits unless you pay $5 for each hundred more?
Hi Bob. Check out this FAQ I wrote.
https://mattk.com/new-photoshop-and-adobe-pricing-announcement/
In 2010, I took a course at a local community college for $200 so that I could afford the “Student Price” for Photoshop updates (I think they were $125 or something). That strategy saved me about $500 every time Adobe upgraded back in the day.
Thank goodness it’s only 9.99 a month. EASY, take my money… Great discussion fellas!
Great podcast. I have two questions.
1. Was the oil paint software you used that you said did a phenomenal job a plug-in of stand alone? What was it?
2. Will you do a show talking about support. live support, chat support, and community support.?
When I need support it is normally while I am in the middle of doing a commercial job. Topaz gives great support. I used to be chat based but now is email based. It was best when it was chat based but it is still good as email based even though there is a 24 hour turnaround for email based support.
I dropped on1 a few years ago because their support was non-existent. Now I base 50% of my decisions to buy a new subscription plan based on the quality of support. I would love to see a discussion on this subject.
Jim
Hi James.
1. I always just used the oil paint filter in PS but there are plug-ins that do it.
2. I’m not sure what we could discuss. It’s something we have ZERO control over right? I feel like a discussion would just be us complaining that none of us have access to as fast a support as we’d like. Open to it, but I don’t really know what we’d talk about. Thanks!
