In this video we’re going to cover the latest features inside of Lightroom in Adobe’s Fall 2024 updates. We’re going to change it up a bit and cover both Lightroom Classic and Lightroom Desktop features in this one so feel free to skip ahead if you’re just a Desktop user. Enjoy!
PS: Don’t forget to check out my What’s New in Photoshop video as well (Click Here)
Very interested in your work and learning from you
Hi Matt – several things:
(1) How many versions of Lightroom are there? I’ve heard of 3: Classic, Desktop, Cloud – or are Cloud and Desktop the same thing?
(2) Do you know why Adobe won’t do simple things to mame work easier, like making the panels detachable so we can set-up our workspaces the way we want, and in the Print module, darken the guidelines of the Custom layout grid so we can see better how to places the photos? These are requests to Adobe from years ago, by not only me, and they never get implemented. Do you know why not?
(3) Between the latest versions of Mac OS and Lightroom printing colour management is broken. This applies to both Canon and Epson printers. We were hoping that the latest updates of MacOS and Lightroom would have fixed all that. Apparently such is not the case. Do you have any insight into why.
Fancy new features are fine, but these are some basics that deserve attention they are not getting despite having been raised in their forums. Every time I see these new feature rollouts I am frustrated by the lack of attention to things they’ve either broken or never done right and don’t fix.
Hi Mark…
1) There are 2… LR and LR Classic
2) I don’t. Adobe doesn’t clear anything through me, or explain their choices to me at all. I realize that there are request for them to do things and you may even see posts and forums where 100 people pile on and ask the same thing. But that doesn’t always represent the community at large (millions of users). If I’ve realized one thing doing this stuff, you can’t please everyone… heck you can’t even come close 🙂
3) I don’t have any info on this. However, I can tell you that nearly every new release of every Operating system combined with other software tends to break this every year. It’s not just Adobe. The printer companies have some (if not most) fault in this as well.
I don’t understand what edits and activity is in content credentials is.
Hi, Matt, Thanks for keeping us up to date!! I have a question that I think you answered in one of these “What’s New…” tutorials, but I couldn’t find it.
I’m in Lightroom Desktop and select “Edit in Photoshop.” When I finish my Photoshop edits, how do I save it back to Lightroom Desktop? I tried “Save…” and it saved it in some strange location under Adobe (NOT in the folder where my original is).
I looked through all the preferences in both Lightroom Desktop and Ps, but I can’t find a setting to specify where the .tif should be saved.
I’m on the newest version in both apps and on Windows 11.
Thanks so much!
Susan
P.S. I found that it is filing some of the tif files (when I click ‘Save’) at:
C:\Users\[my name]\AppData\Local\Temp
Why does it do that and is there a setting to specify that it file them in the same folder they originated from?
Thanks, again!
Hi Matt! I rely on all of your videos to learn how to best use Adobe products, and appreciate your ability to teach! In the latest Lightroom version (not classic), when I import .art files into Lightroom and try to Enhance Photo, it tells me this file format is not supported. When I then go to Bridge and export the photo as a .DNG, Lightroom still says it is not a supported format. I never had this problem with previous versions of Lightroom. Am I doing something wrong? Many thanks, Pam
Hi Pam. I don’t know what an .art file is and have never heard of it but it doesn’t sound like a raw file generated from a camera – I could be wrong but that’s what my quick search showed. But that feature only works with a raw file or an original DNG that was generated from a native raw file. What you’re doing is not a raw file or a native DNG even though you used the DNG converter. You just used a workaround to get a DNG but it’s not a native real DNG with all of the information that DeNoise needs to work. Thanks.
Tried it and it didn’t work. Then saw that there is an Opacity slider after you click on the remove button and mine had been set at 33%, which was probably the default when I upgraded. Moved to 100% and worked perfectly. Thanks.
How do you (or do you) incorporate Bridge into your workflow?
I used to use it when I wanted to look at a folder of photos that I didn’t want to import in to Lightroom Classic. Now with the “local” tab in Lightroom (not classic) I no longer use Classic or have the need for bridge. Thanks.
Hi, Matt! I print my best wildlife photos. Many require removing some imperfections or even removing a tree or other animal distraction. Since AI fill is such low resolution, might I be better off using the clone tool to remove those distractions?
Hi Nancy. Yep, it’s just a tool and serves a purpose but doesn’t work for everything and sometimes we need to use some of the older tools to get the job done.
I Have been following you since attending your Lightroom Seminar for Lightroom 5 back when NAPP was still a thing. Another insightful dive into the software. I actually pulled out the little booklet from that seminar because I forgot some of the basic keyboard shortcuts and they still work. Hope you’re having a great fall.
Thanks!
As always. thank you. Very much appreciated.
Very helpful, thanks.
Couldn’t do without you Mark.
I’m sure somewhere, a Mark thanks you.
great review and new features.
Is LRC AI remove free and local or do we need to pay for each edit and use cloud upload ?
Same question for Photoshop.
ON1 PR2025 is powerful, local and freeof charge until now.
Thanks for you two videos. the info will help
Thanks for these timely explanations of the Adobe updates. I teach PS and LR to members of our photography club so it’s nice to get a jump start on what is new and available.
Matt,
I opened Lightroom Classic v14 on both my desktop and laptop and did not get a new catalog. Can you point me to the Adobe website so I can find out what when wrong or not?
Paul
Hi Paul. Just go to File > Open Catalog and point it at your old catalog and it will upgrade. If you need Adobe support just head to their website and you should see an option for support somewhere.
THANK YOU MATT!
