Yesterday I sent out my new feature videos for Photoshop and Lightroom. But Adobe also added some new features for Camera Raw. And for the first time it’s got some significant changes that ARE NOT in Lightroom. Will they get there? I’m sure, but for now one my favorite change of the Fall 2024 Updates is only in Camera Raw. Enjoy!
PS: And before you ask, yes I believe these features SHOULD make it in to Lightroom at some point. I have no idea when… but I assume Adobe will still keep them on par once the the features are out of the “technology preview” stage.
PSS: Don’t forget to watch my full Photoshop and Lightroom update videos as well. (Click Here)

I am using a Mac and can’t get the details to have drop down box when clicking details. I get sharpening and denies not working with photo type. plus masking, detail, radius, super resolution raw details etc. Kindly offer correction. Thanks
Hi. Please read this to see if it helps: https://mattk.com/adobe-2024-fall-update-photoshop-and-lightroom-faqs/
Followup: Adobe says there is a bug in their software that will have to be fixed. In the meantime, camera raw 17.0 will work with older versions of Ps, but not always with Ps 2025.
Good tutorial, as usual. However, I’ve found that the new Cr Detail panel does not populate in Ps 2025 even after the tech update box is checked in preferences. It does populate, in Ps 2024, however. Adobe support cannot fix the issue and suggests, unhelpfully, that I just continue to use Ps 2024 (thus forfeiting all the new tools in Ps 2025 or employing two Ps versions in my workflow. I know you don’t handle Adobe issue and I’m not asking for help from you. But I thought you would like to be aware of the situation, as I don’t believe I can be the only person in the world experiencing this issue. Thanks.
Just because I’m curious. Have you been to Norway ????? This looks just like a small Norwegian fjord.
And thanks for the VERY informative videos you make.
Hi. Yes I’ve been there. Beautiful country!
Thanks Matt. A couple of things I noted when trying to use Camera Raw.
Have to access it through Adobe Bridge for any photos that I have previously opened or through the filter in Photoshop. So if I just want to run Camera Raw there is a bit of a different approach.
When I selected the Technology Preview to allow for new AI features the application did not refresh until I closed and reopened it. Little note at the bottom of the information panel I missed the first time.
For generative AI, Adobe provides credits. Depending on the type of account, this can be a limiting factor. Credits reset each month. For now, Adobe is allowing us to exceed the monthly credits. A way to get us to either purchase more or hook us in I suspect. A few of your followers may not know that Adobe will limit the credits in the future. AND, the amount of credits for the photography plan is different if you were a subscriber before November 1, 2023 (250 credits) or became one after that (100 credits).
Took a bit of digging through the Adobe site to find the details.
Thank you
As ever !
For taking the time to do these videos !
I really enjoy the controlled speed of your speech & explanation – no drama / clear / appropriate !
Cheers
Matt, my Photoshop Camera Raw does not have Technology Preview. Why is this?
Hi. Please take a look at this FAQ: https://mattk.com/adobe-2024-fall-update-photoshop-and-lightroom-faqs/
Matt, have several of your courses and all have been very helpful; however, I have a question relating to the new Denoise feature. I am running ACR 17.0.0.2043. Under “Detail” it shows “Denoise” with the following explanation: “Reduce noise with AI. The result will be saved as a new DNG.” If I click on this “Denoise”, I have to click “Enhance” for the process to work. Then I end up with an enhanced version copy. Any thoughts? Thanks.
Hi Jim. This is the way it’s always worked (and still works in LR). If your camera raw doesn’t look like mine and you’ve done everything I mentioned in the beginning of the video I’m unable to troubleshoot for you. You’d have to contact Adobe. What I showed in this video is the way it’s supposed to work provided you’ve done what I mention early on. Thanks.
Matt, I got as far as ‘detail’ and clicked on it (Camera Raw 17.0) but there is no box to check for Denoise. I assume I have the current version,
I checked the Tech Preview, and I’m seeing the Adobe Adaptive preset, but I’m still seeing the “old” Denoise method (creating a dng), not the “new” Denoise checkbox. Am I missing something?
Thanks in advance!
Loren

Hi Loren and Matt,
I was having the same issue, and I accidentally found a “fix” that worked on my computer (Win11). I wasn’t seeing the updated Detail panel with Denoise option. I don’t really use ACR so I wasn’t going to contact Adobe about this. I decided to just continued with Matt’s tutorial to see what else was new in ACR.
When I switched the profile on my RAW file to Adobe Adaptive (Beta) I was prompted by ACR to Update AI Settings. Once I did that the Detail panel updated with the new Denoise options that Matt covered at the beginning of this tutorial.
I’m not sure why I needed this extra step, but it worked, and the Detail panel continues to show the new Denoise slider when I open additional RAW files. I hope this helps.
Dan
Oh, so we must use the beta for the features profiled vs the production version. I wish presenters would say right up front if they are working with and/or demo-ing a beta version. Versus saying, “Here’s what’s new in Ps, ACR or Lr!” if the features aren’t in those production products & are just in beta releases for testing. Many of us don’t run (and don’t want to run) risky betas on a single computer… we download & install a new production release expecting promoted features & then find out they aren’t available. It is both confusing & disappointing.
How did you switch the profile on my RAW file to Adobe Adaptive? Thanks, I am not seeing a lot of what he is talking about
Given the rarity of HDR monitors, the only value I see in the HDR capability is making pretty wallpapers for your own computer.
The real question though is how does the adaptive preset differ from just using the Auto tone? I ask because I have custom profiles for my camera (via a ColorChecker card) and, well as you said, we can only use one profile.
If you use the HDR button in ACR, will the effects show up in a print?
They will not.
Thanks Matt for another great video. Im assuming that if you wish to use this new denoise feature, you will have to switch from using LR to camera Raw ? Or do you foresee this feature coming to LR anytime soon ?
Thank you
Thanks. I wrote this above the video: PS: And before you ask, yes I believe these features SHOULD make it in to Lightroom at some point. I have no idea when… but I assume Adobe will still keep them on par once the the features are out of the “technology preview” stage.
Hi Matt, great video and very helpful, as always. I have a question, what happens when you use the denoise feature and you save the file ?
If I now open it in LR, will I see the photo with or without the noise reduction applied ?
thanks so much,
Hi. I’m not sure. I haven’t tried it but give it a try and let us know. THanks!
I am a bit confused. My Camera Raw in 17.0 does not look the same as your. IE. it is not possible to enable generate expand.
Great video as always, Matt. The problem that I have is when I go to “edit in Photoshop” from Lightroom it no longer invokes Camera Raw for my Canon raw files (CR3) but goes straight to PS. If I then go to Filter in Camera Raw Filter from PS all the Technology Previews you demonstrated are greyed out even though the file in PS appears to be a raw file and despite the fact that I have ticked off the new AI features in CR and restarted both LR and PS. The only way I can access the new features of Camera Raw, that you have shown, is to drag the raw file into Camera Raw from Windows Explorer. This sort of defeats the purpose of maintaining a LR catalog. I have watched your video several times in case I missed something but no luck.
Hi Grant. This is the way it’s always worked. This is not a LR feature. This is a Camera Raw features that only works on a raw photo. Thanks.
So the file I bring from LR into PS (in its RAW (NEF) form) won’t work with the new ACR features in PS even though the filter give me the option to turn them on?
Stated differently, the “camera raw filter” in PS won’t use the new ACR features because it was migrated from LR?
Thanks,
Lisa
Hi. This should help: https://mattk.com/adobe-2024-fall-update-photoshop-and-lightroom-faqs/
Excellent.
Good stuff, as always, Matt. Are you still using one of the Topaz apps (AI/DeNoise/Sharpen) on your bird photos? Do Ps Denoise and Sharpening now stack up favorably against those? Thanks and regards.
I really appreciate your lessons on what’s new!
I like some of the new features you showed in the Camera Raw update. I’m not sure how to use Camera Raw in conjunction with Lightroom. I know how to use Photoshop, ON1 and Topaz in conjunction with Lightroom but not sure how to go about using Camera Raw. Is it like a plugin? I hope that makes sense.
Hi. You don’t use Camera Raw with Lightroom. You’d use it in place of. Thanks
Matt I don’t know where I would be if you weren’t here to educate us about these updates. Thank you for these informative videos! I always wonder – do they give you a heads up as to what updates they have engineered and how they work? Or do you just figure it out!? Regardless, I’m very grateful.
Hi Jules. Thanks so much. Sometimes I know what’s coming but honestly, I try to stay away from betas. Features are evolutionary not revolutionary at this point. So I generally know an outline of what’s coming and I either download the day before or day of and prepare my videos unless I think a feature is really revolutionary (masking a few years ago for example). Hope that helps. Thanks!
After you have made the necessary changes in Technology Previews, completely close the application and then re-open it. The changes should now have been activated. This worked for me.
I made the necessary changes Matt suggested, then turned computer off completely, and then restarted. All changes were functioning.
Thank you so much Matt. You explain and demonstrate things clearly and eloquently
It appears that the Adaptive AI Profile only works for images brought into Photoshop/Camera Raw via Bridge? The Camera Raw filter accessed via editing from Lightroom Classic to Photoshop does not (in my installation) have that or the other Adobe (color) Profiles. Because going from Lightroom it’s no longer a RAW file? Is that correct – or my error? It looks like some similar questions…
Hi. The Photoshop Filter, or opening Camera Raw in any way that’s not originating from the original raw photo, IS NOT opening a raw photo in to Camera Raw. These features work on raw photos only. Thanks!
Matt,
HELP Please! I followed your instructions activating technology previews but none of the new features are showing up. I even restarted my Mac just in case. Any ideas? Here’s what I’m doing: Open Lightroom find a photo I want to work on that is untouched. Go to Photo – Edit In – Photoshop 2025. Photoshop opens the image I go to Filter – Open Camera Raw – go to the gear and ensure Technology Previews New AI Feature is checked, click Ok go back to the photo and still no features 🙁 Any ideas?
I’m having the same issue. I wonder if it’s because going from Lightroom to Photoshop it’s no longer a RAW file. I can see the options if i go from Bridge.
After you have made the changes in the Technology Previews, close the application completely and then reopen it. The changes should have now been activated.
Hi. The Photoshop Filter, or opening Camera Raw in any way that’s not originating from the original raw photo, IS NOT opening a raw photo in to Camera Raw. These features work on raw photos only. Thanks!
Hi David, I believe the new features require a raw file, and won’t be available when punching in from LR, since that action creates a tif file. I got the new features to work when either using Bridge or opening directly in Photoshop.
Does this mean now that lightroom is redundant and we should be using bridge, acr and photoshop?
Hi Bill. No different than before. If you use LR your workflow shouldn’t change. If you use Bridge/ACR your workflow shouldn’t change. Thanks.
I don’t even have anything that says “Technology Previews” and I keep getting a notice that says “Camera Raw requires GPU Acceleration to Edit photos” and then Learn More.
Does this mean I need a new computer?
hi. You’d have to contact Adobe if yours looks different from mine.
Great job, as always!
Just letting you know, in case no one else has mentioned this…but I have been following this update tutorial on my updated Camera Raw 17 on a PC. You must be on a Mac because, so far, there is neither a DeNoise box in my version 17 DETAILS menu option nor a crop tool to utulize the expanding for my Camera Raw 17. I have looked through all of the settings I can find so determine if I just might need to “turn on” that mention, but I can’t find it anywhere. I am only at 5:06 minutes in your video, but I suspect there will be other additional function you can do but I can’t. I am sure I am in ACR 17 so it’s not because I don’t have the current version. I went to look online for others’ comments and it seems that others are also having an issue not being able to see the crop tool in ACR since around version 14. Of course, I can crop in Photoshop, but it would have been nice to be able to take advantage of the upgrades in this newest version of ACR that you are showing in your video.
Crop is available. It is the second icon down on the right-hand strip. It includes the expand feature too,
Hi. You should contact Adobe if you’re not seeing what I see.
Good morning Matt, not seeing denoise check box. I turned on the new AI features and settings panel using the settings button you described. I clicked on the detail dropdown…. no denoise check box And I only have Sharping, noise reduction and color noise reduction
Also, you have several more options on the left side of the settings panel. i only have General Preformance and Technology previews. You have file handling and defaults and lastly workflow. Thanks much
Thanks Matt, Great tips. I’ve been hoping for the denoise change (hooray,no extra file created) and am so pleased that I will use Bridge for a while instead of Lightroom desktop, since punching into photoshop from LR creates a tif file.
Interesting that LR and ACR have diverged. In your experience, what are the odds that Adobe ‘eventually’ brings these features into LR?
Hi. As I mentioned in the paragraph above the video, I believe they will get there very soon.
These features you have described so well in these 15 minute-ish videos are impressive. I’d like to have a list of them with a short explanation, sort of like a dictionary of the new features in each program. Maybe Adobe provides that for us old folks who have run out of memory acreage and could use .pdf cheat sheets. I sure could use one for these updates.
Hi. If you do a google search for what’s new in Photoshop you’ll most likely come across an Adobe page that lists them out.
Not seeing crop tool on the right side in RAW?
