I’ve always felt that the sky is one of the most important parts of most photos. That’s why we need accurate ways to select it, so that we can target it, and work on the tones and colors to get them just right.
So this week, I’m sharing 3 of my favorite tools for making those selections.
Also, feel free to leave a comment below… What’s your favorite sky selection tool?
Enjoy!
If you receive a “Sign in to Confirm You’re not a bot” message this is not my website that causes this. This is a YouTube / Apple Safari issue. You can read more about it and how to fix it here. Alternatively you can copy/paste the link to this page in to another non-Apple browser or go directly to my YouTube page to watch this video. Thanks!
Some great pointers on specific masking techniques and what to do when selecting sky just isn’t satisfactory, especially using the Object selection. Well done!
Ciao Matt, I’m from Italy, where can I find original English version instead of the automatic Italian translation? Many thanks and 👏👏👏 for your video, always on top.
Very nice presentation, very condensed but informative. Useful immediately.
Matt, what is that monitor that you are using
Apple XDR.
Useful. Thank You
Thanks, Matt. It’s a Great video, as usual. Would you consider a tutorial on how to reflect the colourful sky on the foreground water?
Michael
I’d love if your example photos were downloadable so we can follow along with your great explainations.
Also, at the end, you referenced a video on masking. How do we find it? Thank you.
Hi Linda. If I gave out every one of my photos to download with every tutorial I’d have thousands of photos roaming around the internet. I do it for my paid courses, but it’s just not possible for free videos. As for the other video, it shows up in the top left when I mention it – just click on it to watch. Thanks.
I use Lightroom by preference for sky editing.
Perfect timing, Matt. I was just getting some snowstorm shots this week and having an awful time cleaning up the blah sky.
Thanks!
Always appreciate your lessons.
Always useful. Thanks
That last one needed a sky replacement!
Can’t wait for your sky replacement course. I am good with LR but not photoshop.
Thanks, great information!
Thanks Matt. I have had a few sky problems recently, had not thought of select object as an option.
Regards Ted.
Great information, as usual. Those annoying halos are one of the most troublesome aspects of Lightroom. I appreciate the tip.
Matt,
How about the hack: Better Sky Mask – select sky, invert, select sky, subtract sky?
Hi Mike. It works great. But it’s a way of refining the selection once you choose Select Sky… this video was more about various ways to actually select the sky. Thanks.
Mike’s method with fewer clicks:
1st step: Select sky
2nd step: Intersect the mask with a second sky selection
In my opinion, this technique belongs under «various ways to actually select the sky».
