Hi everyone. While I was editing a photo this week I used a tool that used to be one of my favorites. I actually still use it all of the time, but it hit me that we don’t talk about it a lot anymore so I thought I’d show you the edit that I did and WHY I used this tool instead of some of the more popular options we have today. Enjoy!

PS: If you receive a “Sign in to Confirm You’re not a bot” message this is not my website that causes this. This is a YouTube / Apple Safari issue. You can read more about it and how to fix it here. Alternatively you can copy/paste the link to this page in to another non-Apple browser or go directly to my YouTube page to watch this video. Thanks!
Great video, Matt, as are just about all of yours are. One other reason to use Content-Aware Fill in lieu of any feature that uses Generative AI is that you don’t spend any of your generative credits doing so. In months that I do a lot of post work this is sometimes an issue for me as I have the basic plan with but only 100 generative credits per month (and no rollovers!). On the other hand, I believe Adobe has stated that if and when you exhaust your monthly credits, generative AI features will still work, only much more slowly (and please correct me if I’m wrong on that). Again, this website is an outstanding resource (and I loved your Topaz Photo AI course!).
Hi Steve. It’s great you use Content Aware but it’s simply not as good as Gen Fill in most cases. As for credits, no one has yet to be charged for extra yet. And 100 distractions a month is pretty good – not sure how much you edit. But Adobe did say they will charge so you have to imagine it’ll come eventually. Thanks!
When I was on a windows machine and doing a lot of post processing work for other photographers, I was quite adept at Photoshop and Lightroom. By adapt, I simply mean that I used a bunch of tools, actions, and keyboard shortcuts to get the work done quickly. Once that work Went away I left Photoshop for a long time maybe two or three years. Now I am on a Mac and starting to use Photoshop once again for my own photos, and I’ve discovered that I have lost a lot of that technique. Which of your courses would be best for me to relearn what I used to know quite well?
Hi. My Photoshop System course covers Photoshop from the ground up by showing how to use the tools: https://mattk.com/photoshopsystem
And My Photoshop How To Course assumes some knowledge of PS but covers the most popular “How To” tutorials: https://mattk.com/photoshop-how-to
Hope that helps. Thanks!
Thanks for this timely reminder! It’s so easy to get in a rut of reaching only for the latest tools, rather than considering everything available. Not only can Content-aware Fill often do a great job, it also runs faster than the later AI tools — and with better results, as you pointed out.
I always think of you when seeing Content-aware Fill’s green overlay. 🙂 When the tool was launched, you made such helpful tutorials about it, which are still relevant.
Excellent video Matt you are right about forgetting to use older tools. Thanks for showing this to us.
if you use a slightly feathered selection the transition is even less evident.
Thanks. Very helpful
Thanks Matt. Very good review.
hanks for the reminder.
Thanks for this reminder! Great stuff
I use this more than Gen AI. Nice explanation and confirms why I still prefer Content Aware. Thank you as always
Thank’s Matt. This is very much my preferred option for this sort of situation, with the Patch Tool also high up on the list.
Thanks again, Matt. Always find your tutorials interesting, informative and useful.
Thank you for the very important lesson. You are great Instructor.
Fantastic! You are really a great instructor. Thanks for this; I will definitely be using it.
Great reminder, thanks.

Content aware fill is much faster. As far as I m concerned it works much better than generative fill. Thanks for sharing this information!
GOOD TIP!!!! I just did something that could have used this! In more similar coming up I will!!! Thanks!!!
What your videos so great is that you provide great examples of the concept/issue and the strategy and tools to address it. Really appreciate the step-by-step process as well as the before and after.
Great video. Thanks!
Welcome to the modern age. I am 85 and use it.
Gen fill will also flag crazy things like a sleeveless blouse on a female I have used content aware or the remove tool very successfully in these cases. Yes, there are subtle difference which of course as you said depends on how you wish to use the final image
Excellent information!
